Usually when speaking of jewellery the image that comes to mind is the use of Gold with expensive gems like Diamonds, Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds etc.

But in the mineral world there are hundreds of Gem quality minerals that can be used to create inexpensive but colourful and beautiful jewellery. Gem quality minerals come in many attractive colours and patterns. The kaleidoscope of colour and pattern combination is so unique and beautiful that it inspires creativity and imagination, to often make one of a kind Jewellery pieces.

Here are some samples created with the skilled artisans at Ceylon Sapphires International. Some of the minerals used are Jaspers, Agates, Dendrites, Chrysocollas, and Plumes among others.

Basic stages in faceting or fashioning a gem:

1. Examining the roughs to determine what shape or size the rough is suitable for. In this case the customer's request was for a Round Shape.

2. Next the roughs are preformed on various diamond coated discs to obtain a basic round shape.

3. This is followed by Calibrating the preformed piece to a perfectly Round Shape.

4. Then the gems are cut and polished.

Of course there is more to processing a gem. The gem cutter has to dop the stone for cutting, decide what cutting style to use, whether to cut the Crown (top) or Pavilion (bottom) first, what laps to use for grinding and polishing, what polishing material to use for obtaining the best polish etc.

These are Sapphires from Montana, USA from a parcel of 1,600 pieces processed for a Customer.

Recent work for a customer

Two aquamarines - one large very transparent rough of 53.75 carats and a cut and polished square octagon shaped stone weighing 7.50 carats.

While preforming the rough piece a streak of feathers emerged, challenging our expert cutters. The easiest approach to remove the feathers would have been to re-size the gem, yielding a smaller piece. However, our expert staff left the feathers in an insignificant position without disturbing the brilliance or clarity while obtaining an unusually high yield of 39% (21 carats).

The square octagon piece had a high window and the customer wanted us to close this as much as possible without diminishing the colour and retaining the piece at over 5 carats. Our expert cutters achieved all three requirements with a yield of 5.19 carats.
