The college was established in 1942 by the Vidyartha Society, and is currently run by the Government of Sri Lanka. Mayadunne is the Principal of Vidyartha College and Lt.Col. Bamunusinghearachchi is the Principal of Vidyartha College, Primary Section. College colours are Navy blue, Aqua blue and Gold and the college motto is, “ විද්යා සර්වෂ්ය භුෂණම් “ ( Education is the Best Jewelry ) There are
nearly 1000 students receiving their education in the Primary section, with a teaching staff of 25. There are four houses in the college. They are ;Parackrama House, Wickrama house, Mahinda house , Narendra house
