💎 THE ANCIENT WORLD OF GEMSTONE TRADE
🌍 From Ancient Civilizations to the Global Gem Market
Long before modern jewellery houses, gem laboratories and international auctions existed, gemstones were already travelling across continents.
Gold, sapphire, ruby, lapis lazuli, carnelian, garnet and other precious materials were exchanged through some of the earliest long-distance trade networks known to history.
Archaeological evidence from Mesopotamia shows that lapis lazuli and carnelian were being used in elite jewellery at Ur around 2600–2500 BCE. The lapis lazuli had travelled from the Badakhshan region of present-day Afghanistan—showing that luxury stones were already moving across enormous distances more than 4,000 years ago.
In the Indus Valley, etched carnelian beads were being produced by the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE and spread through trade to regions including Mesopotamia, Iran and beyond.
Egyptian jewellery from around 1850–1700 BCE also contains lapis lazuli, carnelian and gold—another reminder that gemstones were not merely ornaments; they were valuable commodities connecting distant civilizations.
🌊 THE INDIAN OCEAN — A HIGHWAY FOR GEMS
As maritime trade developed, the Indian Ocean became one of the great commercial routes connecting India, Sri Lanka, Arabia, East Africa and the Mediterranean world.
Sri Lanka occupied a remarkable position along these networks.
Ancient Sri Lanka was known as Ratna Dweepa — “Island of Jewels”, while Arab traders knew the island as Serendib. Gemstone use in Sri Lanka has a documented history extending back at least 2,000 years.
Classical writers also knew of the island's gemstones. Pliny the Elder recorded ambassadors from Taprobane (ancient Sri Lanka) during the reign of Emperor Claudius in the 1st century CE, while Ptolemy later referred to Sri Lankan beryl and sapphire.
💙 CEYLON SAPPHIRE — A NAME WITH CENTURIES OF HISTORY
Sri Lanka became particularly famous for its sapphires, star corundum, chrysoberyl, garnet, spinel, zircon, tourmaline and other coloured gemstones.
The island's gem deposits and its position between major trading regions helped make Sri Lankan stones part of an international luxury trade long before the modern gemstone industry existed. GIA London
And the story did not end in antiquity.
From ancient merchants and royal courts to today's international gemstone markets, the journey of a Ceylon gemstone continues across generations.

A gemstone is more than a beautiful stone.
It can carry the story of a mine, a civilization, a trading route and generations of craftsmanship.
