NO more active collection of plastic bottles in Arugam Bay - depicted here was the first day of our vehicle back in 2018 when we were hoping to create a small business around the collection of plastic bottles for recycling. Unfortunately we never managed to break even a single month. Material value is low and so was cooperation of most. We sold our vehicle and decided to focus on fishing net recycling instead of bottles. Our center is still at the same location past the water tower and we will still accept bottles that are brought to us. We discussed a segregated collection that could be delivered to us for processing with the municipality but it is up to them and the businesses of Arugam Bay to implement this - we are done trying ✌🏼👋

After digging deep into fishing net collection during the last year we also did some good old PET collection for . 3000 kg, over 100,000 bottles with the meager value of 250,000 Rs. If we want to do this in the future we need to set up some major changes and upgrades to make this profitable. We have some positive signals from the municipality but without some serious improvement in efficiency and collective effort this could have been the last year of PET collection in . 👋🏼

Finally we shipped off 19,000 Kg of waste fishing net off for recycling abroad yesterday! Abandoned or discarded the amount could cover an area of over 50 football fields entangling and killing wildlife on land or at seas for years.

Super happy the national park wardens brought 300 Kg of PET to us for recycling. The national park is very remote and due to local politics an even further away municipality is in charge of waste from this area, resulting in unwanted disposal to our atmosphere🔥. We often hear the reproach we would earn lots if money with the waste from small minded people. The value of this is about 20,000 rs. For which we unload everything, store it, load it into our baling machine, use electricity and material, store it again and finally load it for - days of work for several staff. All of this would be a hopeless endeavor without organizations like 👊🏼🙌.
