🛑 A Courageous Student Voice at a School Awards Ceremony
During the recent Colours Awards ceremony at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, a student drew public attention for speaking confidently and openly on stage.
According to information shared online, the student involved are highly talented and deserving, with records of notable achievements. It is also being highlighted that Chanithma Sinaly has secured a significant number of victories during 2023 and 2024, which has led many to believe she was eligible for the award in question.
Reports indicate that the award was presented to another student due to attendance issues at a rehearsal, a decision that has since sparked public debate. While schools are entitled to follow their internal procedures, many observers are questioning whether academic and sporting merit should be outweighed by procedural factors, especially when valid academic commitments are involved.
What has stood out most is the student’s decision to speak respectfully yet firmly about her experience. Many have praised this as an example of confidence, awareness of rights, and maturity—qualities that are not always easy for young students to display.
There is also concern expressed by the public that students who speak openly may later face social or institutional pressure, even when their intentions are not to harm the reputation of the school. For this reason, several voices are calling for a fair, transparent, and impartial review of the incident, so that all parties are treated justly and student welfare is protected.
We believe that constructive dialogue, due process, and empathy are essential when addressing matters involving students and educational institutions.
We wish Chanithma Sinaly strength and success in her future academic and sporting journey and hope she continues to bring pride to Sri Lanka at national and international levels.
