“Is my ring jade?”

The answer was yes, but not quite in the way its owner expected.

Its dull green appearance initially made me consider nephrite, but observation alone cannot confirm the identity of a gemstone.

So I tested it.

The refractive index provided the crucial information: this was natural nephrite jade, not jadeite.

Both materials are legitimately known as , but they are different gemstone materials — and distinguishing between them can have important implications for value.

This is why proper matters. What something looks like is only the beginning of the story.

This is one of those gemstones where the colour immediately made me stop and look again. 💙💚

A 1.42 ct natural spinel from Mogok, Myanmar, displaying a distinctive bluish-green colour that is quite unlike anything I’ve encountered before.

Its oval brilliant cut brings movement and life to the stone, revealing different expressions of blue and green as the light changes.

It’s discoveries like this that make such a fascinating gemstone — its natural colour range continues to surprise.

I was told that Phnom Penh’s Central Market was worth exploring for gemstones, so I went in curious to see what I could discover.

There was certainly plenty of colour — especially rows and rows of bangles. But the pieces I examined told a very different story.

One seller assured me that a bangle was “guaranteed natural.” When I asked how that guarantee was established, I asked again…and again…but never received an explanation.

That’s the important lesson here: when buying or , don’t be afraid to ask questions. “Guaranteed natural” is a claim — understanding what that claim is based on matters.

After what I saw, my conclusion was simple: this wasn’t the place I’d choose to buy gemstones.
