Rep movements have come a long way, but differences are still there — mostly due to cost constraints. Here’s a closer look at where Gen vs Rep start to separate.

1️⃣ Oscillating Weight – Material (Gold Rotor)
Gen: Solid 21K gold rotor. Higher density means smoother, more efficient winding with less wrist movement.
Rep: Usually brass or 18K gold-plated. Looks the part, but lighter and less effective in real-world use.

2️⃣ Oscillating Weight – Bearings
Gen: Bearing is almost invisible, giving the rotor a clean, refined look.
Rep: Bearing is clearly visible — one of the easier tells under magnification.

3️⃣ Finishing – Rotor & Movement
Gen: Chamfers and bevels are hand-finished, with soft edges and natural light play. Perlage is also applied by hand, adding depth and variation.
Rep: Mostly CNC-machined. Finishing is consistent, but flatter and more mechanical up close.

4️⃣ Balance Wheel
Gen: Free-sprung, no regulator arms. Better long-term stability and shock resistance.
Rep: Cheaper reps use regulator arms — easier to adjust, but less precise over time.

5️⃣ Movement Beveling
Gen: Hand-bevelled and mirror polished, producing sharp reflections along the bridges.
Rep: Machine-finished, with rougher edges and less definition.

6️⃣ Screws
Gen: Heat-treated screws — harder, more durable, and better colour retention.
Rep: Non-heat-treated, softer and more prone to wear during servicing.

We had the pleasure of working on a genuine Daytona 126515 in Rose Gold (circa 2012), brought in by a client for a dial upgrade to a real meteorite dial.

Cut from natural meteorite, each dial is completely unique. The distinctive Widmanstätten patterns are formed as the meteorite cools extremely slowly over millions — sometimes billions — of years in space.

Because of the way these nickel-iron crystals interlock, the dial changes character with light and angle, shifting between bright and dark tones as the watch moves. No two are ever the same — a true one-of-one piece of cosmic history on the wrist.
