In April 1962, engineer Jean-René Parmentier filed a patent for a crown system called Capuchon & Joint sur Remontoir.

Combining a protective cap with an integrated seal, the design addressed one of the most critical points in any dive watch: the crown.

More than sixty years later, the Sous-Marine Re-Edition carries a modern interpretation of the same idea.

The original technical drawing still exists.

And the underlying principle remains as relevant today as it was in 1962. 🌊

In the 1950s, the French Army needed a chronograph precise enough to navigate by. Reliable enough to survive the cockpit. Simple enough to operate with gloved hands at 30,000 feet.

Most people think a pilot's watch tells time. It does. But that's not why it exists.

In the 1950s, pilots used a flyback chronograph to calculate fuel consumption, measure elapsed time over a target, and navigate without ground support. Every second counted - literally.

The flyback function meant a pilot could reset and restart the chronograph with a single push. No stopping. No wasted motion. No room for error.

The column-wheel mechanism ensured the action was smooth and precise, even in turbulence, even under pressure, even when adrenaline was running high.

This wasn't a luxury. It was a tool built for the most demanding office in the world: the cockpit.

Small crown? Impossible to grip. Mission timing compromised.

The Type 20 was designed around this reality.

Oversized crown. Built for operation with flight gloves in freezing cockpits. Deep knurling for grip. Every detail engineered for conditions where removing gloves wasn’t an option.

Function dictated form. Not the other way around.

When we revived the Type 20 in 2020, we did not redesign it. We continued it.

The original military specification called for a flyback chronograph with a column-wheel mechanism, a case diameter suited to the cockpit environment, and a crown protected enough to survive the rigors of active service. Every one of those requirements is present in the modern re-edition.

Authentic heritage does not need reinterpretation. It needs custodians. ✈
