My thoughts about some pieces that moved me in the Wallraf-Richartz museum in KΓΆln - part II
7. Herodias, P. Delaroche, 1843
The intense chiaroscuro, the luscious fabrics and the unsettling feeling this picture leaves you with are intended to leave a mark on the viewer - you almost feel manipulated. Technical and precise Neoclassicism theme choice but also emotionally intense Romanticism blended perfectly by a true Master.
8. Swiss Alps Landscape, P. Baum, 1917
The Alps were for centuries a treacherous, terrifying barrier as well as a major gateway for artists from N. Europe who wanted to descend into Italy and study Ancient Roman, Renaissance or Baroque styles - the "Grand Tour" or "GT" in the car industry. This perception shifted with infrastructure, technical achievements and alpinism in the late 1700s. The Alps now had an air of mysticism and airiness to them. A clever positioning of this painting right next to an ancient Roman wall, mirroring purpose.
9. Butterflies, O. Redon, 1910
Redon painted mainly in black & white but this colourful little painting has a dreamlike, poetic, fantastic presence. It triggers synesthesia and there is a musical quality to it, mystical, ethereal, like listening to Debussy's "L'après-midi d'un faune".
10. L'Odalisque Blonde, F. Boucher, 1752
Sensuous pastels in a typical Rococo style, her porcelain skin, a rose on the floor hinting at her lost innocence. Hedonistic, luxurious and objectifying, this feels like a n**e for "immediate consumption", stripped from the usual allegorical masks (such as a Venus). Your girl next door, waiting to be reduced to the viewing pleasure of an elite male collector.
11. The Girls on the Bridge, E. Munch, 1902
A strong diagonal creates tension in a painting and Munch surely knows how to use that, just as he did in The Scream. The dark still water, the anonymity of the figures and the unnatural pink of the bridge, although not directly unsettling, carry a hint of morbid silence. This painting hangs alone in the back of a long corridor next to a steep staircase. The railing creates another sharp diagonal accentuating the painting's features - brilliant.
