Gallery Pacific

Gallery Pacific We are a family run business established in Auckland in 1975. This family owned and operated gallery has its origins in 1975 as an opal specialist.

Gallery Pacific specializes in exclusive New Zealand made Jewellery and Art Objects, available through our online store and shipped globally from Auckland City. Exclusive New Zealand jewellery and art objects
Gallery Pacific presents a unique collection of jewellery adornment and art objects in central Auckland. The gallery has evolved continuously, growing to become a showcase for senior New Zeal

and artisans sculpting and carving in wood, jade, glass, stone and bone. New Zealand blue pearl, Australian opal and South Sea pearl are incorporated into distinct contemporary jewellery that is beautifully presented. These works, both ornamental and wearable, reflect and embody the unique artistic culture that flourishes in New Zealand today. Traditional Maori and Pacific design elements are invigorated and reinterpreted. We offer attentive and professional service from our central Auckland gallery, through our website, and via email.

The Queens Arcade in downtown Auckland City has been the home of Gallery Pacific for 25 years. Suite 8A is the auspicious designation of our current space within the premises.
However, the old building will close for an extended period of refurbishment shortly, and the group of small specialist retailers here are required to vacate.
We see this as an opportunity to pause our day to day running of the physical shop, to take a break, maybe ‘go on a sabbatical!’
Refreshed and inspired, later in 2026 we will look for a suitable location to set up a new Gallery Pacific.
In the meantime, our website and online store will function as the place to view and purchase the special jewellery and artworks we have to offer.
Exceptional new items will be introduced, and we will keep Gallery Pacific alive on social media.
Thank you to all who have visited us in Auckland, and to the creative minds behind the artwork and jewellery we present.

PUTORINO carved by John Collins.
Kauri wood (stained), Muka binding applied with natural plant resin, Paua Shell.

During the 1980's and 90's, Hirini Melbourne (Maori academic, poet, composer, musician) formed a small group of people known as Haumanu. They are credited with bringing about a renaissance in the making and playing of Taonga Puoro - traditional Maori musical instruments.
John Collins was involved with Haumanu in wananga / workshops, where early examples were studied. These had lain dormant in museum collections, separated from the knowledge of their use, manufacture, and role in traditional society.
Hirini Melbourne, Brian Flintoff and Richard Nunns are names associated with this period of rediscovery, but there were also others involved who are less well known.
John Collins went on to make significant pieces that have been used in performance, and which are documented in publications from the time.
These two Putorino flutes are lovely new carvings, with expressive Wheku (faces) imbuing them with a human personality.
Local patronage ensures they remain in Aotearoa.

Necklace hand made by Katerina for Gallery Pacific. Featuring New Zealand Mabe Pearls, iridescent and multi hued, cultivated in the ocean by Eyris Blue Pearls.
‘Form follows function’ is not often applied to jewellery - it is a principle originating in architecture, also used with industrial design.
Blue Pearl Necklace taps into this concept. Fragile marine gems encased in protective bezels of 18carat gold, linked together with the simplest ‘jump rings’. Slinky snake with fluid articulation, the terminal extensions are fine gold bars, linked in the same manner.
This simple method of making a necklace could be ancient or new.
Timeless, functional work of adornment that comes alive when worn.
Available at Gallery Pacific in Auckland City, and online.

HOKIOI is the first new artwork from John Collins to pass through Gallery Pacific in over three years. Free hand carved in Kauri timber, stained and inlaid. 1m x 255mm (39 x 10 inches).
Hokioi (Haast's Eagle) was a formidable bird of prey, the world's largest eagle in its time. It is thought to have become extinct around 700 years ago, due to human competition for its primary food sources, particularly the large Moa bird.
This powerful sculpture continues the artists carved record of inhabitants of Aotearoa New Zealand, past and present.
To follow, we have two beautiful Putorino (woodwind instruments) from John Collins.
I'll photograph and feature them here over the next week.
