Andy Ellis sat down with Richard Currie at TMC Trailers to hear the story behind an epic generational Kiwi business based in Christchurch.
-------------
Richard, how long has TMC Trailers been running?
Richard: Since 1948. My grandfather served in the Second World War and saw American trailers being operated over there. He took that concept and became the pioneer of trailer manufacturing in New Zealand.
So what's the process to actually build a trailer?
Richard: The first step is designing them. We've got CAD engineers who model the products on the computer, and then we use stress analysis to work out where the weaknesses are and strengthen them up where they need to be. Then we cut and fold all the profiles and start welding them together. Once the chassis are fabricated, we move into sandblasting, then the paint shop, and then they go into our finishing department where we do all the light assembly.
And you chose .kiwi for your domain?
Richard: It just reflects who we are as a New Zealand business. We saw one of our customers using it and I thought, that's pretty cool. Nice and short!
