These dials begin their journey as 2.5m billets of carefully selected material, ordered in the smallest volumes possible in New Zealand.

Naval Brass blanks are cut to 200mm lengths, while Phosphor Bronze is more difficult to obtain, making each Phosphor Bronze dial a considered undertaking.

Cutting these billets into form takes a special tooling system, designed & built in-house, tailored to make one or two pieces at a time along with know how & advanced programming.

This is only the beginning, each material requires a different regulation - meaning two different programs.

It was about sitting down with people properly involved in what they do & understanding how they think through their work, across sculpture, precision manufacturing, jewellery, writing & technology.

We were asked by the Designers Institute of New Zealand ( )to host a podcast series, & took a simple approach discussing design with designers & practiced creatives.

This was the final sixth episode with , talking through his sculptural work here in Auckland. We’ve known each other for over 20 years, so it felt like a natural way to finish the series.

In the most unsuspecting places, momentary discoveries connect one to the ongoing want of traveling unfamiliar destinations. A short alley, filled with curiosity in the old town.

When beginning an endeavour like manufacturing timepieces in New Zealand, the final apex feels so far from reach. Early on, relying on specialist external services was necessary simply because the tools, the processes, or the in-house capacity were not yet possible.

More recently, every Paceracer is now engraved in-house to a higher standard, deeper, more consistent, using new tooling acquired and developed internally.

One of several tools added over the past few years, with more still to come.
