I’ve just finished this pounamu breastplate, and for me it carries the feeling of protected aroha ♥️

Strength with softness.
Love with self-respect.
Presence with heart.

I chose to keep the natural movement through the deep green stone beautifully visible. It is part of the character and story of this kōhatu, and one of the things that makes this taonga so special.

Worn close to the manawa, it feels like a reminder to honour your heart, nurture your peace, and stay open to the people, opportunities, and experiences that bring more meaning into your life.

Amethyst is one of those stones almost everyone recognises, but there is much more happening inside it than simply “Purple Quartz”.

Its colour comes from trace iron within the quartz and natural irradiation over geological time.

Depending on how those elements are distributed through the crystal, you can see everything from soft lavender through to deep violet, sometimes within the same specimen.

That variation is one of the things I love most about natural minerals.

They don’t need to be perfectly uniform to be beautiful.

In fact, very often, it is the zoning, inclusions, changes in saturation and tiny irregularities that make a piece worth looking at for longer.

Amethyst has also been associated across different traditions with clarity, reflection and calm, which feels rather fitting for September.

Not because spring needs to mean “do more”.

Sometimes clarity is simply knowing what deserves your energy next.

There is a kind of strength that doesn’t need to announce itself.

It shows in the way someone carries themselves.

In the decisions they make when nobody is watching.

In the boundaries they hold.

In the way they protect what matters and still remain open enough to listen.

That is the kind of strength I’ve been thinking about this month.

This kind of strength right now, is less about being loud or dominant and more about grounded presence. Knowing who you are. Standing behind your values. Taking responsibility for the path you are shaping.

Pounamu feels particularly suited to that.

It carries weight, history, resilience and permanence, but it also asks something of the wearer: what will you carry forward with you?

What does strength look like in your life right now?

What quality do you associate most strongly with true strength?

This taonga carries presence.

A pounamu breastplate, worn close to the manawa and grounded in the strength, mana, and whakapapa carried by the stone itself.

For me as the carver, this form speaks to protection, identity, and carrying what matters close.

And that natural line through the pounamu? I wanted it seen, not hidden.

Okay, I genuinely need your thoughts on this one… 👀🐾

I was looking at Poppy and had a thought:

What if we created pounamu taonga specifically for our kurī to wear on their collars?

Not saying we’re doing it yet 😂
But the idea has definitely planted itself in my head.

One thing carving has taught me is that having a direction and being attached to the direction are two very different things.

I can begin with a clear idea for a piece, then uncover a change in colour, a natural marking, translucency, or something in the structure of the stone that makes me reconsider it.

That doesn’t mean the original idea was wrong.

It means more information became available.

Some of the pieces I love most exist because I was willing to change course.

There is probably a life lesson in there too.

Which Hei Toki would you choose? 👀

- Two completely different pieces of pounamu.
- Two different cuts.
- Two different personalities.

🤎 One finished with a deep brown binding - earthy, grounded and strong.

🤍 The other with a natural tan binding - lighter, softer and beautifully organic.

Both are Hei Toki.
Both carved by hand.
But each has its own presence.

That’s one of the things I love about working with pounamu - even when I carve the same form, the stone always has a say in what the finished taonga becomes.

Happy Father’s Day ♥️

Today we’re thinking of the fathers, pāpā, koro, stepdads, uncles, guardians, mentors, providers, protectors, and steady souls who show up in the lives of those they love.

- The ones who guide quietly.
- The ones who protect fiercely.
- The ones who teach through their actions.
- The ones who carry more than they often say.

We honour the men who have done their best with what they had.

And we honour the father figures who stepped in - the older brothers, uncles, grandfathers, coaches, friends, and mentors who became safe places, steady hands, and voices of encouragement when they were needed most.

We also honour the women who have had to carry both roles.

The mothers, aunties, grandmothers, sisters, and wāhine who have protected, provided, guided, nurtured, loved, and held everything together when there was no one else to do it.

You are seen too.

Because Father’s Day can hold many things.

Joy.
Gratitude.
Grief.
Distance.
Complication.
Love.
Memory.

However today lands for you and your whānau, we send aroha.

In our mahi, we are often trusted with the kōrero behind the person someone is choosing for.

Who he is.
What he has carried.
How he has shown up.
The aroha he may not always put into words.
The steady presence that has shaped a life.

And every story is different.

- Sometimes pounamu is chosen for strength.
- Sometimes for grounding.
- Sometimes for protection, courage, connection, legacy, manaaki, or aroha.

Not because a taonga can say everything.

But because sometimes it can help hold the feeling behind the words.

To those who show up with love, steadiness, humour, care, and quiet strength - thank you 🙏🏽
