The first painting visitors encounter in our current exhibition ‘Feral Grace’, titled ‘Where the Untamed and the Sacred Meet’, acts as a portal to the central themes of the exhibition collection. A phrase that both defines Vashti Johnstone’s practice and adorns the canvas, this work speaks to the creative force woven throughout this suite of paintings - the tension between strength and surrender, wildness and wonder. Exquisitely framed, this dynamic piece would make a captivating point of difference to any art collection. On view in ‘Feral Grace’, the final day to experience the exhibition in its entirety is June 1 — don’t miss it!! ✨

Three alluring paintings by Auckland-based artist Michelle McIver have just arrived in Gallery, and we are over the moon about it - long term fans over here!! 🎉

Working between abstraction and landscape, Michelle’s paintings explore the relationship between light, form, and space. Rather than referencing the landscape directly, her works sit somewhere between observation and memory, softened by reflection, a sense of movement, and changing light.

Having spent five years living in rural Japan, Michelle’s practice carries a sensitivity to stillness, restraint, and spatial balance, with subtle references to Japanese aesthetics emerging through geometric form, negative space, and an emphasis on atmosphere over detail.

You can view Michelle’s new works in gallery and online via her artist’s page on our website. A former Christchurch resident, this collection is inspired by some of her favourite places in our region.

The poetically titled ‘Where Water Listens and Light Lingers’ is currently on view in Vashti Johnstone’s latest solo exhibition, ‘Feral Grace’.
This mesmerising acrylic-on-canvas work began with the image of a white cactus (a symbol of protection, endurance and hope) and evolved from there intuitively. Vashti reflects that, “there is an underwater feeling to this work, as if the image is suspended beneath the surface, where light filters through and shapes dissolve into motion. What emerges is less a fixed image than a sensory experience immersive, tender and perpetually shifting.”

‘Where Water Listens and Light Lingers’ is on show along with Vashti’s full collection of paintings for ‘Feral Grace’ both in Gallery and online until June 1st. Don’t miss it - with the long weekend approaching now is the ideal time to make a plan to come and visit. See you soon! ✨

Vashti Johnstone’s solo exhibition ‘Feral Grace’ has been sitting beautifully in our space for several weeks, and we have been inundated with appreciative responses from visitors about this striking collection of paintings.

There is still plenty of time to experience the exhibition and to purchase a work that resonates, including the captivating ‘Moon Beasts’, pictured here.

Vashti’s intention is that her paintings bring a powerful positive presence into the homes of those who choose to live with them. Speaking about ‘Moon Beasts’, she writes:

“The moon holds a gentle power, while animals offer a primal connection to the natural world and a bond between spirit and earthly presence.

The cow represents nurturing, abundance, gentleness, and grounded stability. The rabbit embodies the moon’s living spirit: fertility, renewal, intuition, and gentle endurance.”

Come and spend some time with ‘Moon Beasts’ and the full body of work for ‘Feral Grace’, on view in Gallery and online (link in bio) until June 1st. 🌙

Believe us when we say that images and film can only hint at the power of Vashti Johnstone’s remarkable new exhibition, ‘Feral Grace’. Still.., we hope this reel offers some sense of the commanding beauty and presence of the collection.

We were fortunate to have local writer Pip Goldsbury (Quill Interiors & Words) spend time with Vashti’s work and reflect on the experience of encountering ‘Feral Grace’ in person. Her words capture the essence of what it feels like to be in the room with these paintings. She writes:

“Vashti Johnstone’s latest exhibition is a profound statement. Spiritually rich, Feral Grace bares the trademarks of Vashti’s seeping painterly style.

Animated layers of riotous colour absorb the viewer, while Vashti’s distinctive lettering and dissolving lines are immediately recognisable. However, Feral Grace hits deeper than previous works: a primal experience, a spiritual veneration of nature, a multi-faceted exploration of an entrenched wildness.

A series of eleven large-scale works, Feral Grace is present and grounded, yet it takes the viewer on a journey of exploration. There’s an exhilarating madness and an uplifting chaos as colour chases light across the canvas. But this is coupled with an innate calmness, a portal to pause, breathe and reconnect.

A spiritual journey, the series is heavy with symbolism, from Vashti’s dense application of earth tones, representative of compassion, nurturing and wisdom, to feminine deities: sacred, intuitive and caring. Soaring birds become a metaphor for the connection between the earthly and the divine, while domesticated animals offer a glimpse into a world of peace and prosperity.

It’s Vashti’s realm, her inner being surging into her paintings, an otherworldly portal of transition, freedom and intuition, a way being, and a place where the untamed and the sacred meet.”

On view in Gallery and online until June 1st, we encourage you to visit this exhibition in person - your eyes, heart and soul with thank you for it. 🙏🏼

Introducing Vashti Johnstone, the artist at the heart of our upcoming exhibition ‘Feral Grace’.

Based in Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, Vashti is a contemporary painter whose practice is driven by a lifelong devotion to visual language. Since completing her Diploma in Painting at Aoraki Polytechnic, she has continued to push her practice in energising and innovative ways, layering charcoal and paint into a colourful language that feels both grounded and otherworldly.

In 2025, Vashti was selected for the prestigious Château d’Orquevaux residency in France, where time immersed in a new cultural landscape - alongside travels through Italy and beyond - deepened her engagement with history, architecture, and the emotional resonance of place. These experiences continue to echo through her work.

This exhibition marks Vashti’s third solo presentation with our gallery, a relationship that has grown alongside her ever-expanding practice. ‘Feral Grace’ brings together a new collection of expressive figurative paintings shaped by instinct and memory. Through earth tones, dissolving lines, and fragments of text, her works speak to transformation and release, inviting viewers into a space where the untamed and the sacred meet.

‘Feral Grace’ opens this Saturday, 9 May. Join us at the exhibition opening from 2pm - all welcome.
