One of the standouts in the upcoming International Stamp Auction 48 is an impressive collection of United States stamps. The collection is offered across lots 933 to 1031. In exceptional condition, most of the stamps are mint unhinged and showing very good centring, making these lots ones to keep an eye on.

The very first Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) ever awarded was to New Zealander Flight Sergeant Leslie Bruce Wallace.

Wallace was serving as a wireless operator with 83 Squadron. While on a bombing run on the 21st of December 1942, his Lancaster was attacked from below.

Both the bomb aimer and Wallace were injured when flares inside the aircraft caught fire. Despite a bullet wound to his leg, Wallace immediately began throwing burning material out through the rear turret and eventually brought the fire under control, all while the Lancaster remained under continuous night fighter attack. He only mentioned his wound at the end of the flight.

He was credited with helping ensure the aircraft’s safe return, doing everything possible to assist the pilot. For this, he was awarded the very first Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying), one of just five awarded to New Zealand airmen out of 103 in total for WWII.

Wilks $2 Star Replacement
In 1970, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand quietly introduced “star” replacement notes, used to swap out damaged banknotes during printing. These notes had different prefixes and a serial number ending in a *. Collectors later caught on, but very few examples of the first types were saved. Today, only 15 examples of the Wilks $2 notes with the 0A0 replacement prefix are recorded.
