Matariki is the Māori name for both the star cluster as a whole and a specific star, also known as the Pleiades.
The celebration of the Māori New Year also means reflection, hope, our connection to the environment and the health and wellbeing of people.
Happy Matariki!

June is a pearl month, and to celebrate that, we are incredibly excited to be part of one of our favourite shows from Radio New Zealand, "Afternoon", with Jesse Mulligan.

Mike Radon had the opportunity to explain how his family proudly farm the finest, rarest, and most beautiful pearls from New Zealand, the Abalone -Paua Pearls from Arapawa Blue Pearls.

We are off the beaten track, but this brings you new and exciting insights into what else happens at Whekenui Bay on Arapawa Island!
The Tory Channel Leading Lights are a prominent feature on your arrival to Arapawa Blue Pearls or the Homestead. They were built in 1881 by the Marine Department to aid the passage of shipping through the Cook Strait entrance to the Tory Channel.
The Lights were housed in two identical kauri timber pyramid-shaped structures. When a ship's captain aligns them, the boat can make the passage safely through the entrance.
They were de-manned in 1930 when the lights were changed from kerosene lamps, requiring twice daily attention. Electricity was introduced in 1945 by batteries, and this method is still used today.
While visiting the Leading Lights, you can still see the footsteps wear on the steps inside of the buildings.
Both buildings have been exposed to severe winds and storms and will withstand more over the years with all the excellent maintenance provided by Maritime NZ.
Every year thousands of people travel between the North and South Islands by ferry, and our local lighthouses have an essential role in keeping mariners safe across the Tory Channel.
