www.emmajanedonald.com Originally from New Zealand, Emma studied a Bachelor of Fine Art (Sculpture) at Auckland University.

Upon relocating to Melbourne, she proceeded to study an Advanced Diploma of Gold and Silversmithing at NMIT. The combination of these areas of study results in work that displays an attention to construction processes and a commitment to artisanal modes of production. Emma is fascinated by how things are made and by how they work. Her work often involves the appropriation of basic building forms from history—pyramids, domes—interpreted on a smaller, more personal scale. A continuing fascination with micro-organisms, tessellations, geodesic domes, space travel and the aesthetics of futuristic architecture results in work that adopts wide-eyed science-fiction sensibilities. She explores these elements and interests in contemporary jewellery, finding ways to reconcile and marry the aesthetic worlds of the organic and the industrial.

Concept Sketching.
Some gemstones ask very little of the design.

The beauty of this remarkable 55.68 carat Urchin Quartz specimen lies in its extraordinary natural inclusions. Rather than competing with them, I wanted the setting to frame the stone, inspiring this detachable pendant concept, designed to be worn on either a handcrafted chain or the Half Circle Choker (pictured).

Maker’s hands

The jewellery I find myself reaching for most days. I’ve always been drawn to a monochromatic palette - white gold, blackened sterling silver, and the subtle tones of white, grey, and black diamonds. Their understated beauty and durability make them ideal companions for everyday wear.
Most of the pieces in this collection were designed and made at different points in my life and practice. Together they tell a story of evolving ideas, personal milestones, and an ongoing fascination with form, material, and adornment. There is always another piece taking shape in my mind, waiting to join the collection.
