In this episode, Katy talks to Nicola Kane, who is on a mission to save as many life stories as possible!

Nicola set up Moving Memories after losing her Dad in 2018. Regretfully, with him went many of his stories and memories, and Nicola wants to make sure other families don’t face the same loss.

Nicola supports whānau to capture the life memories of loved ones, in a beautiful legacy video that can be passed down through future generations. As well as recording stories, she believes a video also captures the true essence of the storyteller – their voice, personality, quirks, mannerisms and all the things you just can’t capture in written form.

This is a true passion project for Nicola - she describes it as the best job in the world!

Most families have something special and unique to their family that they do every year around Christmas time.

For example - my sister is the family table decorations maker (and shortbread baker!). The photo below shows one of the lovely set she did last year. The shortbread didn't last long enough for a photo! Maybe you have a chief Christmas cake maker, or a special tree decorating event each year in your house? Lights on first or last?

Capturing your family traditions on camera is a great way to make sure they remain part of the family culture for future generations.

ONE photo and ONE paragraph - an easy & quick way to start.

This week I'm running Story Sharing workshops in 5 retirement villages, and as homework they'll get this Photo Memories worksheet so they can complete this simple exercise.

Every time I share this Photo Memories exercise with village residents, they agree it's an easy task and they are keen to do it. It's not overwhelming for them and very doable.

And if a picture can tell a thousand words, imagine how many words can be told with video!

This is why I believe video is the best way to save a life story.

It takes a lot less time to record key memories and stories of your life than it does to write a full life story. You'd need at least 6 months to write a life story, when a video can be recorded in a few hours.

And you not only capture the story - you also capture the personality, smile, voice and true essence of the person telling the story.

Start with the Photo Memories sheet, and pick 1 photo each week. In a few weeks you'll soon have a bunch of stories to include in your life story video.

I've been given permission to share clips from a recent series of life story videos that I did for this wonderful guy. I'm sharing a short clip here so you can see an example of my finished work.

He had some hilarious stories and had us in stitches at times, but he also shared stories of loss and some harder times. He wanted to share his whole story, not just the good parts. This is what I encourage everyone to do, because life is not all sunshine and rainbows! By sharing stories of difficult times you help others feel less alone in their own struggles, and give them hope that they too can get through the tougher times.
