Exhibition coming soon...

Dates: 3rd-30th June

Venue:
Steph Lusted Jewellery
17 Whitmore Street, Wellington central

I hope you can visit the Showroom sometime this June for this special exhibition. A small group of works that I have been head down crafting at the bench.
This will be the lucky last exhibition at my public Showroom here in Wellington as I will be moving my workshop to a new space in July to dedicate more time to making my work.
My new workshop will no longer be open to the public. However, I will be available to meet in person when needed. Otherwise, everything as per usual through my website, email, phone, etc.

Hope to see you all soon...

Ps: The Showroom is currently closed until next week (Wednesday 20th May) as I am finishing off work for this exhibition. Thank you for your understanding.
Purchases are still available through my website as per usual:

I have been making these little Field Mouse Bronzes for a wee while as they were a limited edition of x25. These are the last two numbers available and the last two of their kind that I will be making.
Number 17 and 19 are currently both available to view in store or to purchase through my website if you have had your eye on these...
(All other numbers have sold)

The little Field Mouse is crafted in solid Sterling Silver, which sits nestled amongst a pile of leaves crafted in Bronze.

A long time ago... this is me when I was 19 years old. I was in my last year at Art School, and we students had the wonderful opportunity of learning the ancient art of Bronze casting. From sculpting in wax, spruing up the casting buckets, pouring Bronze (and Aluminum) into our moulds, and working the metal casts. Needless to say I loved every minute. I carved my first human skull, which I cast in Bronze. I also made one in Aluminum, which became the handle of my very unique umbrella 🌂 😀.
I have always loved making things and exploring various techniques and materials, learning the ancient roots of craft.

What am I working on at the moment?
Well, I am currently making up some pieces which were ordered through my website of existing designs; working in my Showroom which is open to the public Wednesday-Friday 10am-5pm; and I am also dedicating some time to practicing (when time allows) some simple engraving techniques to train my hand and muscles into this craft which takes hours and years to master.
In-between all these tasks, I am also designing and making a new body of work for exhibition here at 17 Whitmore Street in June. I'm not sure how many pieces I will be able to finish, but these are all new designs, so I'm enjoying the ride.
There are never enough hours in the day, and my work always seems to take longer than anticipated, but that is how it is. Designs stay in my mind sometimes years before I get the time to make them... but things are going to change later this year which will give me more dedicated time at the workbench, which I am looking forward to. Watch this space...

Thank you for following my journey, and I hope to have some new work to show you in the coming months..

Continuing on from my post last week showcasing a variety of Objets d'Art that I have created over the years, I was reminded of this pair of Swan Salad Servers I designed and handcrafted quite a few years ago now. This is another example of how broad the art of goldsmithing/jewellery making can be. It is a craft that is only limited by your imagination and of course the technical ability you have at the time.

These are robust enough to use, with the handles crafted in Sterling Silver, the White Swan is carved from both Whale bone and cattle bone, while the black Swan was carved from Buffalo horn.

Swans have been the focus of many designs of mine from brooches, pendants and Necklaces. It was from a brooch design I made featuring both a black Swan and a white Swan nestled harmoniously together that lead me to designing the Swan Spoons.

I love the concept of William Morris that went somewhere along these lines: "do not have anything in your home that you don't believe is either beautiful or useful "...
I hope you feel the same...back to jewellery pieces soon...

Objets d'Art /Part 1: Non wearable sculptural pieces made from a variety of precious materials including Sterling silver, Gold, mother of pearl shell, native timber, tagua nut, bronze. Looking back over some works that I have made over the last 10 years. A couple of these were commission pieces (including a customers beloved cat netsuke, carved from native timber, which doubles as an anatomical heart when flipped over), but many are from various collections, which I try to put out once a year which usually feature at least one sculptural work.

The following images are as follows:
1.) Waterbaby
2.) Swan Maiden
3.) Field mice on piles of flowers
4.) Puriri Moth, carved from Puriri timber and Sterling Silver
5.) Pekapeka-tou-roa and native Jasmine/ wall sculpture
6.) Mourning Glory
7.) Devil on horseback/ commission: this was an interesting request and I loved making it. It is a sculptural representation of the finger food "devil on horseback " which is usually made with either a prune or date wrapped in bacon with a toothpick (in this case crafted in gold). I was really pleased with the prune which I carved from an extremely dark African hardwood, it looked quite realistic.
8.) Beloved cat & anatomical heart Netsuke
9.) Commission: to adorn a fine silver ingot with forest creatures which included a silver frog, Snail 🐌 with a mother of pearl shell, leaves in gold and a lizard.
10.) Mourning Glory Bronzes

I do enjoy the diversity of my craft and combining materials for their colour, contrast and texture. It is such a joy bringing my ideas to life, and it completes this creative path when they find a home and are treasured.
Thank you for supporting hand crafted original pieces of art.

What am I working on at the bench?

Well, as per usual, quite a few varied projects...I have just finished off some ring orders for my Long-tailed Bat Ring design, aswell as the Longfin Eel/Tuna Ring; I have recently finished off a commission piece, and in-between these jobs I am starting to develop a new body of work planned for exhibition in the coming months.

Some of you may already know this, but I am moving workshops this year, so the exhibition I am referring to will be the last of it's kind here in my current space, at 17 Whitmore Street, Wellington. (New Zealand)

Watch this space...

Celebrating fresh water fish. Close up images from The Swan Maiden/Collectible. The fresh water fish that feature in this piece are: the Giant Kokopu, which are very beautiful! ( this is the large silver fish in the middle), the Upland and Refin Bully are on either side. The Upland Bully is crafted in yellow gold due to their often golden hue, and the redfin bully is crafted in Red Gold, as this fish has quite strong red colouring.

The lilypad's are fabricated from Sterling Silver and feature the odd Moonstone, which represents droplets of water balancing on the leaves.

Waterbaby - Objet d'Art/Sculpture
I made this piece about 7 years ago, and in my unconscious mind, this was probably the precursor to The Swan Maiden, which I made a few months ago. I love ocean/water themes, and the concept of creating a world within a shell seems poetic and romantic.
The Waterbaby was at first crafted as a sculptural piece. The baby itself can be removed from the shell and held in one's hand. The Sterling Silver cockel shell works as a decorative anchor that holds the shell open. When removed, the main shell closes to protect the Waterbaby.
Sterling silver fish hold up the mother of pearl shell, and a small gold starfish adorn the lid as well as the head of the baby.

One of a kind
