Lampwork glass beads handmade in Wanganui, New Zealand I have made and sold handcrafts for many years – working with fabric, concrete, clay and stained glass.

I loved working with stained glass, so decided to try making glass beads. I bought a book (Making Glass Beads by Cindy Jenkins), a torch, some glass and a propane bottle. I read the book, hooked up the torch and with a shaking hand, (hoping the insurance cover on the house was adequate), lit the torch and made a really ugly bead. I am always trying to work beyond my ability and some beads are so b

ad they end up as pot-plant decorations – they do add sparkle to the dirt! I love working with glass. The possibilities are endless and every year new colours come onto the market. Some glass is easy to use, but some, especially the reactive and silvered glasses are downright capricious. One day they will do exactly what I want, yet on another day they will refuse to co-operate, producing nothing but mud! Rude words don’t appear to help! I know this, because on occasion the air around my workshop turns a lovely shade of blue. I don’t always achieve my aims and the end results aren't always pretty, but the journey is often exhilarating, never dull, never predictable and never ending. Love it! Suzan

My little glass flowers, strawberries and toadstools are now being stocked at the beautiful 88 Putiki Gallery, Whanganui. There are also some cute little ready-made bouquets.

Fire-Light Beads will be at the Whanganui Winter Market at the racecourse tomorrow. Site 106 in the Veandercross Lounge on the ground floor. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm. I have Thread Weavers and lots of lovely little glass bellflowers and bouquets for sale. Hope to see you there.

I wasn't happy with the little bird pot-plant pins. They just weren't colourful enough! So back to the drawing board (or flame in this case!) I think these little guys are much better.😄 They are $15 each and available at The Little Shop, 137A Victoria Ave. Whanganui.

FLAX THREADERS - finishing tools for harakeke weavers.
I'm still making these useful little flax threader tools for all the wonderful weavers out there. The small and medium size threaders feature a glass bead (handmade by me in my Whanganui workshop). I probably won't be making many more of the large ones with wooden beads, because I enjoy making the smaller ones more. 😄
Prices are: Small size - glass bead - $12. Medium size - glass bead - $14. Large size - wooden bead - $12.

Another addition to my new "Garden Pins" range. Simple little bellflowers and leaves. I get to use up all the short rods of glass on these cute wee guys. Now available at The Little Shop 137A Victoria Avenue, Whanganui.

A nice change from making jewellery. I've been having lots of fun creating these decorative little garden pins. They add some cute colour to pot plants and look especially good with succulents. The glass is melted directly onto either brass or stainless steel wire. The wire is 16-18cm long, so getting them in the kiln once they are made is a bit tricky - I basically have to open the kiln door and toss them in - otherwise it's hot fingers - ouch! 😄 Ha!

I love making leaves - they are all different which makes them exactly right. Yay! I like the way the Rubino Oro glass in the pink flowers is sometimes opaque and sometimes transparent. I don't think I'll be able to repeat that effect, 'cause I can't remember what I did. Ha!

I've been making lots more Thread Weavers. Almost all my stock has been bought by Aussie crocheters (is that a word?). I decided to alter this "display" necklace, so it can be worn by a real person. I had to make extra leaves and extend the length. It did look lovely on Miss Judy Garland. 😍 It is now for sale at MiNZ - Made in New Zealand 137A Victoria Ave, Wanganui.
