I've got my eye on you... literally! 👁️

Artists in France began painting tiny watercolor miniatures of a single eye on ivory—a trend that quickly captivated Great Britain in the late 18th century before making its way to the United States in the early 19th century.

These tiny portraits became known as "lover's eyes." Usually featuring the eye of the giver, they were deeply personal gifts exchanged between loved ones. By showing only the eye, the subject's identity remained a secret known only to the giver and recipient, creating an intimate keepsake that seemed to return the viewer's gaze.

They were also made as mourning jewelry to remember loved ones who had passed away.
