Their natural homeland lies primarily in the mountainous and steppe regions of Central Asia — from the areas of present-day Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to Iran and Afghanistan. The wild tulips that grew there captivated people with their intense colors centuries ago. They gained particular significance in the Ottoman Empire, where they became a symbol of beauty, elegance, and prosperity. The name “tulip” is probably derived from the Persian word for turban, as the flower’s distinctive shape reminded Europeans of this traditional headwear.
