I discovered my talent for making jewelry five years ago. Like many Palestinian women I was looking for something that I could work on because I love it rather than because I have to do it, and jewelry offered me a way to do this. After graduating from the College of Engineering in 2009 I enrolled in the English Language degree program at Al Quds Open University, and at this time I also entered the jewelry making field. I had no background in this field and had to start from scratch, but day by day I have developed skills and experience and I now have customers from across the West Bank.
My goal is to spread the thoughts and feelings of Palestinians to the world in a completely different way from the past. To do this I decided to take thoughts and feelings from books and novels and turn them into pieces of jewelry.
As I began to apply this idea, I learned Arabic calligraphy and began drawing. I draw phrases that have and reflect special meanings or messages from Palestinian culture, such as Yasser Arafat’s famous phrase: يا جبل ما يهزك ريح (“Oh mountain, the wind cannot shake you.”) which is incorporated into the design of the necklace shown below. After drawing, I then manually cut the pieces of metal such as gold, silver or copper.

My project involves designing and manufacturing Arab-style jewelry with a modern touch. It aims to spread classic Arabic calligraphy and Arab phrases and heritage to the whole world. My ambition is to expand this small project and I hope to find assistance to develop my abilities, refine my existing talent and deliver my message to as many people as possible.
From the beginning I found that there was strong local community of customers and jewelry designers, and I soon started selling my pieces at the Mahmoud Darwish Museum shop in Ramallah. This gave me great support because I saw that despite the limited number of the pieces, demand for my work was high and I had soon had many fans. I have continued to sell my work at the museum shop, and I also use social media to market my products.

Unfortunately there are very few women in Palestine working in this field. Unlike in the West where there are many women employed as jewelry designers, most designers and manufacturers of hand-made jewelry in Palestine are men. I believed that I had many different ideas and could bring a woman’s touch to this field while still using high quality materials and producing professional pieces.
My advice to other young people is that if you want be successful and achieve your goals, surround yourself with people who believe in themselves, who are motivated to advance their own careers, and who are positive thinkers. They will be your inspiration.
Be patient, believe in yourself, define your own business, and remember to put the customers first.
