At the bench, Konstantin Chaykin is assembling the tourbillon cage for an entirely new watch. Tiny components are brought together on the assembly stand, with miniature screws carefully set in place and each element of the unit checked for a precise fit. This tourbillon will preserve an important visual link with the manufacture’s earlier complications of this kind: the Alpha-design cage. One of Konstantin Chaykin’s recognizable developments, it has recurred at key moments in the brand’s history, including in the unique wristwatches Martian Tourbillon and Stargazer. In the new model, the Alpha cage will once again become one of the watch’s defining features.

Konstantin Chaykin’s watches have already left Earth and undergone testing aboard the ISS. Yet before those orbital trials, Chaykin had set himself an equally ambitious goal: to create a mechanical watch capable of displaying the time of another planet. The three separate subdials of the Mars Conqueror Mk1 divide the information by function: Earth time is shown in the centre, Martian time on the left, while the right-hand subdial displays the Martian date and a miniature astronomical indicator showing the position of Earth and Mars relative to the Sun. The Martian date indication can also be used to measure the duration of a mission in sols, or Martian days. Inside is calibre K.20-1 with an in-house module made up of 175 components – a number that gives a clear sense of the scale of this engineering challenge.

Но до испытаний на орбите Чайкин поставил перед собой не менее амбициозную задачу – создать механические часы, способные показывать время другой планеты. Три отдельных субциферблата модели «Марс Завоеватель МК1» разделяют информацию по смыслу: в центре расположено земное время, слева – марсианское, справа – марсианская дата и миниатюрный астрономический указатель, показывающий положение Земли и Марса относительно Солнца. Индикацию марсианской даты также можно использовать для отсчета продолжительности миссии в солах, то есть марсианских сутках. Внутри работает калибр К.20-1 с мануфактурным модулем, состоящим из 175 деталей – цифра, наглядно иллюстрирующая масштаб этой сложнейшей инженерной задачи.

Genius Temporis “Blue Arrow” is a striking chapter in the history of Konstantin Chaykin’s technical and design innovations. The watch brings together the aesthetics of several eras. On the one hand, its single hand refers to early portable watches of the 15th and 16th centuries. On the other, the model does not directly borrow from historical watch design, but reinterprets it in a modern neoclassical idiom.
The graphite-toned central area with vertical satin finishing, the light-colored hour ring and the deep blue Arabic numerals give this historically important prototype a refined and coherent appearance. Its main feature, however, remains hidden until the dedicated button is pressed: the single hand, shaped like a crossbow bolt, instantly switches from indicating the hours to indicating the minutes.

“Floating” hands seem almost magical. In a watch like this, the eye is drawn not so much to the number of functions as to the effect itself: the hour and minute hands appear to hover in the transparent centre of the dial, with no visible connection to the movement. This is why Levitas remains one of Konstantin Chaykin’s most spectacular models in the classic line. Its construction is designed to preserve the illusion: the crescent-shaped in-house calibre is hidden behind the opaque part of the dial, while the moon-phase display is naturally integrated into the composition. As a result, the watch appears both traditional – thanks to its classic astronomical complication – and extravagant, as the entire design is built around the transparent centre with its “levitating” hands.

«Парящие» в невесомости стрелки воспринимаются как нечто магическое. В таких часах взгляд прежде всего притягивает не количество функций, а эффект: часовая и минутная стрелки будто зависают в прозрачном центре циферблата, не имея видимой связи с механизмом. Именно поэтому «Левитация» остается одной из самых зрелищных классических моделей Константина Чайкина. Её устройство продумано так, чтобы не разрушать иллюзию: мануфактурный механизм в форме полумесяца скрыт за непрозрачной частью циферблата, указатель фаз Луны органично вписан в общую композицию. The hands are among the most visible elements on the dial. They are what we use to read the time, so they must look flawless: any irregularity is immediately noticeable. In Konstantin Chaykin’s new horological creation, the elongated shape of the hour and minute hands calls for especially careful work: chamfers less than one tenth of a millimetre wide must remain even along the entire contour. After each stage, the part is inspected and measured against its technical process sheet, in line with the manufacture’s strict requirements. Here, dimensional accuracy is not the only thing that matters. The quality of the surface finish is just as important. Grinding and polishing become the final touch: in the hands of the master, each hand takes on its finished form and becomes one of the watch’s most expressive features.

Стрелки – одна из самых заметных деталей циферблата. Именно по ним мы считываем время, поэтому они должны выглядеть безупречно: любая неровность сразу заметна. В новейшей модели Константина Чайкина вытянутая форма часовой и минутной стрелок требует особенно аккуратной работы: фаски шириной меньше одной десятой миллиметра должны оставаться ровными по всему контуру. После каждого этапа деталь осматривают и измеряют по технологической карте согласно строгим требованиям мануфактуры. Здесь важна не только точность размеров, но и чистота поверхности. Шлифовка и полировка становятся финальным штрихом: в руках мастера стрелка обретает завершенный вид, превращаясь в один из самых выразительных элементов часов.

This year, the FIFA World Cup will be held across three countries for the first time. The tournament will kick off in Mexico City, giving Mexico a special place in football history: it will become the first country to host the World Cup for a third time. Against the backdrop of this major event, it is worth recalling Konstantin Chaykin’s longstanding connection with Mexican culture. One of its most striking expressions is Calavera, a Wristmon inspired by calaveras de azúcar – ornate sugar skulls created for Día de Mu***os as symbols of remembrance and connection with those who are no longer with us. Calavera is one of the most unusual models in the Wristmon collection. The signature Joker indication preserves the line’s recognizable “facial expression”, but gives it a vivid cultural inflection: black eyes, a transparent “moonphase smile” and bright red and blue accents recall the visual language of this tradition.

Over the decades, mechanical watches have displayed time in many different ways: with hands, discs, satellite indication systems and far more elaborate engineering solutions. Yet at the core, the familiar division of the day remained the same: either 24 hours or two 12-hour periods. Konstantin Chaykin, however, saw time display not merely as an established way of counting time, but also as something rooted in living speech. In the Russian tradition, the periods of the day are commonly described as “morning”, “day”, “evening” and “night”, with phrases such as “8 in the morning” or “3 at night”. This idea became the basis of the Quartime watch. It was realized through a patented module: the hour hand makes one full circuit of the dial in six hours, while at the transition from one period of the day to the next, the numerals in the openworked apertures change instantly and simultaneously.

Десятилетиями механические часы показывали время самыми разными способами: с помощью стрелок, дисков, сателлитных систем и куда более сложных инженерных решений. Но в основе всегда оставалось привычное деление на 24 часа или на два 12-часовых отрезка. Однако Константин Чайкин увидел в индикации времени не только устоявшуюся систему отсчета, но и часть живого языка. Для русской традиции характерно обозначать периоды суток словами «утро», «день», «вечер» и «ночь» – и говорить: в «8 утра», «3 ночи» и так далее. Именно эта идея легла в основу модели «Четыре времени». Реализовать ее удалось с помощью запатентованного модуля: часовая стрелка проходит круг за шесть часов, а в момент смены периодов цифровые показания в резных апертурах мгновенно и одновременно обновляются.

In watchmaking, calendar complications are most often tied to the European calendar tradition. Konstantin Chaykin approaches the subject more broadly: for him, the calendar is not merely a mechanical function, but also a reflection of how different civilizations and religions understand time. This idea lies at the heart of the Lunar Hijra table clock, based on the Islamic lunar calendar Hijra mechanism invented by the master. The movement displays the moonphase, date, month and day of the week in the Islamic calendar, along with the date and month in the Gregorian calendar. Another distinctive feature is the recognizable tourbillon with the “Alpha” tourbillon cage. This watch was designed not to conceal the manufacture-made movement, but to reveal it. That is why the dial features cut-outs, while the case is fitted with several mineral glass windows.

On November 9, 2018, Konstantin Chaykin’s “Clown” Wristmon won one of the most prestigious distinctions in the world of watchmaking – the Audacity Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. It was the first GPHG award ever received by a Russian watchmaker. “Clown” grew out of “Joker”, yet quickly became a character in its own right. The rotating hour and minute discs turned into wide-open eyes, the moon phase indicator became a smile, and the raised guilloché pattern gave the face a theatrical expressiveness. With this model, the master showed that haute horlogerie can be not only refined and traditional, but also emotional, ironic and even provocative. The GPHG jury’s choice was fitting: the winner was truly audacious – both in design and in concept. Today, the prototype of the “Clown” model is part of the collection of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva.

Это была первая «женевская стрелка» GPHG, завоеванная российским часовщиком. «Клоун» появился как продолжение «Джокера», но сразу стал самостоятельным персонажем. Вращающиеся диски часов и минут превратились в широко распахнутые глаза, указатель фаз Луны – в улыбку, а рельефное гильоше придало образу театральную выразительность. Так мастер показал, что высокое часовое искусство может быть не только академичным, но и эмоциональным, даже провокационным. Выбор жюри GPHG оказался точным: победитель действительно был дерзким – и по дизайну, и по идее. Сегодня прототип модели «Клоун» хранится в коллекции Музея искусства и истории Женевы.
