On November 9, 2018, Konstantin Chaykin’s “Clown” Wristmon won one of the most prestigious distinctions in the world of watchmaking – the Audacity Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. It was the first GPHG award ever received by a Russian watchmaker. “Clown” grew out of “Joker”, yet quickly became a character in its own right. The rotating hour and minute discs turned into wide-open eyes, the moon phase indicator became a smile, and the raised guilloché pattern gave the face a theatrical expressiveness. With this model, the master showed that haute horlogerie can be not only refined and traditional, but also emotional, ironic and even provocative. The GPHG jury’s choice was fitting: the winner was truly audacious – both in design and in concept. Today, the prototype of the “Clown” model is part of the collection of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva.

Это была первая «женевская стрелка» GPHG, завоеванная российским часовщиком. «Клоун» появился как продолжение «Джокера», но сразу стал самостоятельным персонажем. Вращающиеся диски часов и минут превратились в широко распахнутые глаза, указатель фаз Луны – в улыбку, а рельефное гильоше придало образу театральную выразительность. Так мастер показал, что высокое часовое искусство может быть не только академичным, но и эмоциональным, даже провокационным. Выбор жюри GPHG оказался точным: победитель действительно был дерзким – и по дизайну, и по идее. Сегодня прототип модели «Клоун» хранится в коллекции Музея искусства и истории Женевы.

Konstantin Chaykin presents Matroskin to the global audience – a Wristmon created in collaboration with the legendary Soyuzmultfilm animation studio. Haute horlogerie is increasingly embracing the vivid and immediately readable visual language of animation. Now one of Russia’s most recognizable and beloved animated characters joins this world: Matroskin the Cat. The dial becomes a charming feline face. The hour and minute discs form expressive green eyes, while the moon phase indicator turns into a smile. The magnificent whiskers are executed in guilloché, the upper lugs are shaped like pointed cat ears, and the striped strap evokes Matroskin’s fur. The new model is limited to 90 pieces.

Высокое часовое искусство все чаще обращается к яркому и понятному визуальному языку анимации. И теперь на эту сцену выходит один из самых узнаваемых и любимых мультгероев: кот Матроскин. Циферблат превращается в обаятельную мордочку: диски часов и минут становятся выразительными зелеными глазами, а индикатор фаз Луны – улыбкой. Шикарные усы выполнены в технике гильоше, верхние ушки корпуса стилизованы под острые уши, а полосатый ремешок напоминает кошачьюшерстку. Тираж новинки – 90 экземпляров.

Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus is a Renaissance vision of beauty as a force that unites the earthly and the spiritual. Venus emerges from the sea as an embodiment of harmony. Many art historians associate the painting with images of the Madonna, while the refined figure of the goddess evokes the ideals of ancient Greek architecture. That same sensibility became Konstantin Chaykin’s starting point for creating one of the most unusual watches in the Wristmon universe. Venus is a feminine image reimagined through the language of high watchmaking. The moon-phase indicator forms the delicate outline of the face, while the guilloché flows across the dial in soft waves, like thick locks of hair. Chaykin’s Venus is both n**e and chaste, as if she had come to know the secret of time and now keeps every hour and minute within the lines of her silhouette.

«Рождение Венеры» Боттичелли – это ренессансное высказывание о красоте как о силе, соединяющей земное и духовное. Венера появляется из морской стихии как воплощение гармонии. У многих искусствоведов эта картина ассоциируется с образами мадонн, а утонченная фигура богини – с творениями древнегреческих зодчих. Именно это ощущение стало для Константина Чайкина отправной точкой при создании одних из самых необычных часов во вселенной ристмонов. «Венера» – женский образ, переложенный на язык высокой часовой механики. Индикатор лунных фаз становится нежным абрисом лица, а гильоше расходится по циферблату мягкими волнами, словно густые локоны. «Венера» Чайкина обнажена и целомудренна одновременно: кажется, она постигла тайну времени и теперь хранит каждый час и каждую минуту в линиях собственного силуэта.

In 2018, Dracula joined the Wristmon collection. The figure behind it is a rather dark one, yet in Konstantin Chaykin’s interpretation this character became theatrical and charming in his own way. He is still a vampire, but a deeply charismatic one – with expressive facial features made truly unmistakable by the signature Joker indication. The model’s key feature is its vampire fangs. In Dracula, they are not merely part of the character’s look, but a functional element: at night, the fangs begin to grow, and by morning they retract again. The watch owes its expressiveness not only to this “vampire grin”, but also to the bright red irises, which immediately reveal the nocturnal predator behind this charming character. At the same time, the design of Dracula is not limited to an ironic reinterpretation of Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel. The meticulous finishing of the case, dial and movement makes it clear that this is a luxury watch, one in which a witty idea is matched by a high level of ex*****on.

An entire “mechanical universe” is housed in a 42 mm case. Work on this model began in 2021 and took about two years. Chaykin himself, however, notes that he used the Martian Tourbillon as his starting point, so if that earlier development is taken into account, the timeline can effectively be doubled. The main engineering challenge was to integrate numerous astronomical indicators into a manufacture calibre that had already been developed for a Martian-time watch, without noticeably increasing its dimensions. The result was Stargazer – the first wristwatch in Russian history with 17 complications. Its K.22-1 calibre comprises 664 components, a number that already gives a clear sense of the scale and complexity of the construction. In the cards accompanying this post, we show how the Stargazer movement is arranged and what role its key components and assemblies play.

In one of Horace’s odes, the famous expression carpe diem appears. In Russian, it has become established as “seize the moment”. Yet the literal meaning of the Latin carpe is closer to “pluck” – as one plucks a ripe fruit. This phrase therefore carries not only a call not to postpone life, but also a deeper sense of the value of the present day. The future is unknown, the present slips away, and all a person truly has is the moment lived here and now. This is the idea Konstantin Chaykin translates into the Carpe Diem watch, created in the spirit of the allegorical vanitas tradition. The central figure of the composition is a relief micro-sculpture of Chronos – the ancient personification of Time, which cannot be stopped, held back or turned around. With one hand, he rests on an hourglass – a unique minute indicator. An original shutter system creates the illusion of grains of sand flowing from one bulb to the other. The hours are shown by a single hand on a small subdial, a reference to the Renaissance era.

These two are a perfect match. In 2022, the master marked the fifth anniversary of the Joker with two Gotham City characters – Joker Five and Harley Quinn. Within the Wristmon collection, these characters stand out precisely as a duet. They share the same style, yet are largely built on contrast. Joker Five flaunts a semi-skeletonized dial that reveals the details of the Joker indication module. Harley Quinn is different: her “face” is decorated with a relief guilloché pattern, while the bright pink and blue accents around the “eyes” recall makeup. Their “smiles” differ as well. In Joker Five, the “mouth” became a retrograde day-of-the-week indicator. Harley Quinn, with a heart-shaped “tattoo” on her dial “cheek”, “smiles” with a moonphase indicator framed by a bright red outline reminiscent of the screen heroine’s lipstick. As a reminder, next year Konstantin Chaykin’s Wristmons will celebrate their first round-number milestone – their 10th anniversary.

В коллекции ристмонов эти персонажи выделяются именно как дуэт. Они выполнены в едином стиле, но при этом во многом построены на контрасте. «Джокер 5» щеголяет полускелетонированным циферблатом, позволяющим рассмотреть детали модуля джокер-индикации. У «Харли Квинн» все иначе: ее «лицо» украшает рельефный узор гильоше, а яркие розовые и голубые акценты вокруг «глаз» напоминают макияж. Различаются и «улыбки». У «Джокера 5» «ртом» стал ретроградный указатель дней недели. А «Харли Квинн» с «татуировкой»-сердечком на «щеке»-циферблате «улыбается» индикатором фаз Луны с ярко-красной окантовкой, напоминающей помаду экранной героини. Напоминаем, что уже в следующем году ристмоны Константина Чайкина отметят первую круглую дату – десятилетний юбилей!

Small independent watchmakers steal the show

Wearing a watch with a strong and original design or mechanism made by someone you know has grown into a much more coveted status symbol than a model from an established brand everyone has seen many times over.

Some watch lovers prefer having to wait seven years to get the watch of their dreams from the watchmaker they love, than seven minutes in front of a posh boutique where they will be anonymously received and peddled models that don’t carry the same cachet and emotional value.

Small watchmakers are stealing market share from big brands.
