Some watchmakers build watches. François-Paul Journe built a legacy by refusing to follow anyone else's rules.

In an industry dominated by centuries-old maisons, Journe dared to put his own name on the dial and stake his reputation on every watch that left his workshop. The Octa Lune embodies that defiance. One of the most coveted signatures in high horology began with a simple handshake.

In 1851, Antoine Norbert de Patek met Charles Lewis Tiffany in New York. What followed was a historic partnership that survived two World Wars, economic crises, and over 175 years of evolving watchmaking history.

While legendary retailers like Beyer, Gübelin, and Asprey once had their names printed on Patek Philippe dials, Tiffany & Co. remains the only retailer in the world entrusted with that privilege today.

Even then, not every Patek sold through Tiffany received the double signature—making co-signed references exceptionally scarce.

Two watches can share the exact same reference, metal, and complication, yet ten printed letters at 6 o’clock transform one into an entirely different tier of collector rarity.

Those ten letters aren't just branding. They are living provenance of an alliance forged in 1851.

Before the era of fully in-house movements, Patek Philippe entrusted its perpetual calendar chronographs to an extensively reworked, Geneva Seal-finished Lemania base. The Reference 5970 was the last to carry this historic architecture.

Commissioned by Thierry Stern to bridge two eras of Patek design, the 5970 expanded the case to 40mm while restoring the vintage, angular square pushers last seen on the iconic 2499 of the 1950s. Inside sits the caliber CH 27-70 Q, marking the end of outsourced chronograph ébauches for the manufacture before the arrival of the 5270.

Produced for just seven years, the 5970G in white gold presents a sleek, monochromatic dial paired with sharp, flared lugs. For many collectors, it remains the absolute peak of modern Grand Complication design.

Most perpetual calendar chronographs simply layer calendar modules over an existing base movement. A. Lange & Söhne built the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 421.032FE) from the ground up.

Unveiled at SIHH 2013, the 631-part Calibre L101.1 was Lange’s eighth in-house chronograph caliber, but only its second-ever split-seconds wristwatch. To keep the 18k pink gold 41.9mm case wearable at just 14.7mm thick, Lange inverted standard grand complication construction: the perpetual calendar is assembled dial-side, leaving the exhibition caseback completely clear for the theatrical split-seconds mechanics and twin column wheels.

Across the argenté silver dial, four stepped subdials balance eight separate indications—from a 122.6-year moonphase to a discreet power reserve counter—paired with the factory pink gold deployant folding clasp.

In 2001, German leathergoods house Goldpfeil funded the "Seven Masters" initiative, commissioning seven AHCI legends—including Vianney Halter, Urwerk’s Felix Baumgartner, and Svend Andersen—to design whatever they pleased.

Halter’s contribution, the GPVH, was pure eccentric genius.

Housed in a 29mm x 40mm curved 18k white gold case, every single rectangular divot across the bezel and flank was hammered entirely by hand using a blunt nail and a small hammer. No CNC shortcuts.

The dial reads like a playful study in geometry: a rectangular jump-hour window at 10 o’clock, a circular moon phase at 2 o’clock with an arrow cycling through four graphic phases, and large, blued-steel “Goldpfeil” arrow hands sweeping across a square subdial. Underneath sits a heavily re-engineered automatic caliber featuring Halter’s proprietary jump-hour and moon phase module, calculated to deviate just one day every 139 years.

With only 108 pieces planned in white gold, the GPVH remains one of the rarest, most accessible portals into peak early-2000s independent watchmaking.

Created for the Maison’s 270th anniversary in a limited run of 370 pieces, the Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Retrograde Date Openface (Ref. 4030T/000P-H054) pairs two historic signatures inside a 41mm 950 platinum case.

Rather than cutting away baseplates, the "Openface" construction suspends transparent sapphire calendar discs over deep blue backdrops, anchored by an 18k white gold upper plate hand-engraved with an intricate Maltese cross guilloché motif.

At midnight on the final day of the month, the blued gold retrograde date hand instantaneously snaps back across its arc to day one. Underneath beats the Geneva Seal Calibre 2460 QPR31/270, detailed with a unique linear-brushed côte unique finish.

Introduced in 2003, the Octa Lune houses Calibre 1300, driven by an oversized 1-meter mainspring that delivers 120 hours of stable, chronometer-grade power. Remarkably, Journe integrated an instantaneous big date, a power reserve indicator, and a moonphase disc into a case profile just 10.6mm thin.

While modern Journe dials lean 40mm and larger, this 38mm original captures the golden proportions early collectors prize. Crafted in 18k rose gold with a matching grained solid gold dial—celebrated among connoisseurs as the elusive “pink-on-pink” or salmon dial—the layout features Journe’s signature screwed-down dial frame.

Even better: every adjustment, from the date to the moonphase, is set directly via the flat crown in opposite directions—no inset case pushers required.

When Patek Philippe unveiled the Ref. 5271P in 2014, most eyes were drawn to the 81 flawless baguette diamonds totaling over 4.8 carats across the bezel, lugs, and clasp.

Discerning collectors, however, noticed something far more significant: dial redemption.

Earlier 5270 dials sparked fierce debate with the awkward tachymeter dip dubbed “the chin.” The 5271P was the very first reference to fix it, terminating the track cleanly like the historic 2499 and 5970 before it.

It also marked the first time Patek color-matched the perpetual calendar discs to stealth black against a 12-layer deep black lacquered dial, housing the in-house caliber CH 29-535 PS Q underneath.
