Value: A neo-vintage IWC Ingenieur perpetual calendar, in a 34mm yellow case on a leather strap. It keeps the Ingenieur bezel with its five recesses, so it still looks like the engineer’s watch, just one that knows what month it is.

The calendar is the reason to buy it. This is Kurt Klaus’s perpetual calendar, the one IWC launched in the Da Vinci in 1985. Everything is set from the crown, so there are no pushers in the case side and no stylus to lose. The catch is that it only goes forward. Overshoot the date and you either wait or visit a watchmaker.

Neo-vintage VC is having its moment right now, and the 42050 Overseas remains one of the most iconic pieces from the era. An example with the highly sought-after salmon dial was sold recently. This one, in its blue sunburst dial, arguably the colourway most collectors picture first when they think of this reference, is still available. DM us for details.

One of the more quietly compelling modern Longines dress watches.

Released in 2000 as the Dolce Vita Heritage, the L5.669.6 was created as a tribute to Longines’ rectangular watches of the 1920s.

Rather than simply borrowing the shape, Longines gave it the details that make these early dress watches so appealing. A beautifully proportioned rectangular case, silvered dial, large Arabic numerals, railway minute track and a small seconds register at six.

This example is housed in 18k white gold, measuring approximately 26 × 37mm, with a wonderfully restrained presence on the wrist.

The detail that really sets it apart, however, is the pair of thermally blued cathedral hands. Against the silver dial, the deep blue hands give the watch an almost understated sense of theatre, particularly when the light catches the polished surfaces.

A particularly lovely example of Breguet from the Neo-vintage era: restrained, elegant, and unmistakably rooted in the traditional language of the house.

The 35mm yellow gold case is beautifully proportioned, with Breguet’s characteristic coin-edge case band and slim, straight lugs. It wears exactly as a classical dress watch should, with quiet and subtle presence.

The dial is where the 3580 really comes alive.

Rather than simply applying one guilloché pattern across the dial, Breguet used three distinct guilloché patterns, each defining a different section of the dial.

The main dial carries one pattern, while the small seconds and power-reserve registers each use their own — creating subtle changes in texture and reflection as the light moves across the surface. It is an easy detail to miss in photographs, but one that becomes immediately apparent up close.

Blued Breguet hands, Roman numerals, moonphase and power-reserve indications complete the composition, while the small seconds at 6 o’clock keeps everything beautifully balanced.

Inside is the hand-wound Breguet calibre 618, keeping the watch pleasingly thin and traditional in character.

There is something very appealing about watches from this period of Breguet. They draw heavily from the house’s historical vocabulary without becoming overly literal. The coin edge, guilloché, blued hands and classical numerals are all there, but brought together in a distinctly 1990s interpretation of the dress watch.

There is something particularly charming about the early Blancpain perpetual calendars.

The ref. 5395 dates to the mid-1980s, from the period when Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet were rebuilding Blancpain around traditional complications. It was the brand’s first perpetual calendar of this modern era, and one of the six watches that came to define the Blancpain revival.

At roughly 34mm in diameter and only around 9mm thick, it wears compact without feeling delicate, and with the kind of proportions that make sense on the wrist rather than simply on paper.

The yellow gold case has taken on a beautiful tinge of patina, and this particular example is sold as a full set.

The 15000BA is one of those references that makes much more sense once you see it in the metal.

Introduced in the mid-1990s, this is the Royal Oak distilled into a smaller 33mm case and rendered entirely in 18k yellow gold.

The Royal Oak’s industrial geometry is softened considerably by the warmth of yellow gold, while the brushed surfaces and polished bevels give the case and bracelet the play of light that makes vintage Royal Oaks so enjoyable to handle.

This example carries the characteristic Tapisserie dial, with applied markers and the date at 3 o’clock, powered by AP’s compact automatic calibre 2140.

At 33mm, it is very much of its period yet increasingly interesting today for exactly that reason. Rather than chasing modern proportions, the 15000BA has the elegance of a Royal Oak from an era when integrated-bracelet watches could still be genuinely discreet. (Or as discreet as a solid gold integrated bracelet watch can be)

AP’s own archives record just 361 examples of the 15000BA sold between 1995 and 2006, making this a considerably less familiar sight than its steel counterparts.
