According to Greek mythology (yes, Aquamarine was popular since 500 BC!), Aquamarine was a sacred stone of Poseidon, god of the sea. In one legendary tale, Poseidon gifted an Aquamarine to a mortal fisherman, granting him the power to command the waves and safely navigate the oceans.
Perhaps that’s how Aquamarines became the ‘Sailors’ Stone’, with sailors tossing Aquamarines into the sea as offerings to Poseidon to protect them from rough waters.
Some sailors believed that the scales of a mermaid’s tail were made of Aquamarine, while others insisted that Aquamarine was simply mermaid’s treasure.
