Last week, a longtime client popped by for coffee between meetings, looking for a particular case shape missing from his collection.
I showed him two watches, both of which I considered rather rare.
With a cheeky smile, he remarked to a young friend of mine that almost every watch I showed him seemed to be rare.😜
Perhaps he has a point. But I would like to think I have developed a reasonably good eye for the rare and unusual.
We had a good laugh, and he eventually chose one. He agreed that it was not only rare, but also in very, very good condition, came from a prestigious watchmaking house and represented excellent value for money.
𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦.
Two simple words that mean rather a lot to me.
In a world where everyone seems to want the same watches, what really constitutes rarity?
Does popularity or an extraordinary price tag make a watch rare and collectible?
Not necessarily.
To me, rarity has a value of its own, not always measured in dollars and cents. Some genuinely rare watches remain surprisingly affordable (until discovered), while relatively common ones command extraordinary prices simply because everyone wants them.
After 26 years in this business, I have been fortunate to handle some truly unusual timepieces. Some worth a small fortune, others modestly priced, yet equally collectible.
And that, to me, is the beauty of collecting.
Not simply following the crowd or chasing expensive watches, but developing your own taste and recognising what makes a particular piece special.
And I shall continue my quest to discover and curate 𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦, each with its own unique character, for your collection.
It is never easy, but that makes every discovery and every acquisition all the more rewarding❣️
