In the early 1930s, polo players in British India kept cracking their watch crystals mid-match. The fix was a case that slides out of its frame and flips over, so the dial sits safely against the wrist. Cartier made its own take on the idea, the Tank Basculante, in 1932 with LeCoultre.

This example is in 18k yellow gold, measuring 24mm x 32mm. The white dial is signed “France”, with black Roman numerals and a railway minute track. A sapphire cabochon crown sits on the side, and the slim case sits on a brown crocodile strap. Slide the case out and you get the plain gold back panel, soft with years of wear.

The night before Basel, Gérald Genta sketched an octagonal steel watch with eight visible screws. It launched in 1972 and changed luxury watchmaking. Almost no one remembers that AP also made it small.

This Mini measures 26mm in stainless steel and keeps the whole recipe: the octagonal bezel, the hexagonal screws, the integrated bracelet. The ice blue dial carries a fine guilloché pattern that fans out from the centre like a sunburst. The markers mix Roman numerals at 12, 9, 6 and 3 with small round studs in between, so it reads as jewellery as much as an instrument. It never photographs the way it looks on the wrist.

The Santos was made by Louis Cartier for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, and it’s often considered the first men’s wristwatch. The modern version arrived in 1978 with an integrated bracelet and the screws across the bezel and links. By the 1980s, Cartier gave it a very different attitude.

The Carrée is solid 18k yellow gold from case to bracelet, 29 x 41mm, with 20 links and a signed “santos de Cartier” clasp. The movement is automatic. The white dial has black Roman numerals, blued-steel sword hands and a date at 3, and the blue cabochon crown tops it off. The original box carried a gold plaque reading “Or Massif”, French for “massive gold”. Gordon Gekko wore a gold Santos in Wall Street. So have Lou Reed and Jerry Seinfeld, and Adrien Brody wore one to the Met Gala. Yellow gold with a white dial is the combination collectors keep chasing.

During the height of the quartz crisis, when most of the industry was shutting its doors, Audemars Piguet quietly bet everything on the ultra thin perpetual calendar. That decision didn’t just keep AP afloat, it preserved high complication mechanical watchmaking for an entire generation.

This watch in particular takes that historic movement and pairs it with a beautifully balanced dial, full calendar layout, moonphase, and factory diamond setting along the bezel that catches light without being over the top. On an integrated style gold bracelet, it’s a masterclass in late 20th century Neo Vintage watchmaking that you rarely see out in the wild anymore.

This Royal Oak is watching you.

Two big sub-dials for the day and date, and once you see the owl you can't unsee it. AP sold 654 of these in steel and gold, and most of them went in the first three years, 1983 to 85. The gold tapisserie dial matches the bezel, with brushed steel in between. Eight screws, one stare.

When the strap fits the dial, the whole watch shines.

A small blue Ellipse in a rope-textured gold cuff. A calm white perpetual calendar on black croc. A Corum under a lid of rubies and emeralds, with green croc to match. A second Ellipse that feels like a different watch on brick links. A tiger's eye AP in woven white gold that catches the light like the stone. And a JLC with a dial the size of a charm, set into round gold links. A couple of these are properly hard to find, but they were made to go home with an owner and be worn.

It launched in 1968, years before round and rectangular cases dominated dress watches, and looked like nothing else on the market at the time. Back in the 1920s, this case shape was built for men driving with both hands on a wheel that was far too big, tilted dials and offset crowns so the time could be read at a glance without letting go. It's a detail most people miss today, but it's the reason this silhouette looks the way it does, curved where a square case would be sharp, and comfortable in a way that still holds up a century later. This one's in 18k yellow gold, manual winding, 31mm, small enough to wear close rather than announce itself.
