Interpreting the true essence of mechanics and defining spatial aesthetics through authentic character.
At the global new product launch event during the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair, Sea-Gull officially unveiled the ST1840—a brand-new, in-house developed square movement—to the world. This presentation was not merely a technical briefing, but a comprehensive manifesto on the philosophy of Chinese watchmaking.
The advent of the square ST1840 movement represents not merely a significant breakthrough in form, but a profound return to the fundamental philosophy of watchmaking. Defying the industry norm dominated by round movements, the ST1840 presents itself to the viewer in the authentic, unadorned hue of nickel silver. Free from plating or decorative masking, every gleam of its luster arises naturally from the material’s own texture and warmth—a harmonious composition where mechanical beauty and material integrity speak for themselves. Within the constraints of this unconventional square geometry, the movement’s angular layout redefines spatial aesthetics. Drawing on the precision found in the column grids and *dougong* bracket systems of ancient architecture, Seagull’s engineers—through extensive structural optimization and gear-train modeling—meticulously determined the ideal placement for every gear and bridge. The result is a masterfully orchestrated arrangement where gears mesh with rhythmic precision and bridges provide structural support with balanced poise; each component occupies its rightful place and performs its specific function, ultimately achieving a dual harmony of mechanical operation and visual balance within a compact, square space.
In terms of finishing, chamfering and polishing allow the edges of the bridges to reveal a metallic luster that is simultaneously sharp and soft as light plays across them, while sandblasting imparts a refined, understated matte texture to the main body of the bridges; meanwhile, the swirling patterns radiating across the large barrel wheel resemble spreading ripples, evoking the continuous, rhythmic flow of time. Notably, the ST1840 pioneers the use of entirely colorless jewel bearings—transparent as water—stripping away the vivid hues of traditional synthetic jewels to return to the purest aesthetic of mechanical watchmaking. It is also equipped with a free-sprung balance and a four-weight balance wheel; the precise weighting of these four weights enables micrometer-level rate adjustment, elevating the pursuit of precision to new heights. Following extensive structural optimization and spatial reconfiguration—with every aspect of the gear train layout and bridge geometry meticulously refined—this square movement masterpiece has been realized, successfully blending the essence of traditional watchmaking with bold, boundary-breaking innovation.
