Specimen Arrival at AGA Lab

Emerald (Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆), Type III Gemstone
New to our reference collection: an uncut emerald crystal exhibiting well-defined hexagonal prismatic habit, typical of the beryl family. This specimen, believed to originate from Zambia, shows vibrant green saturation attributed to chromium and/or vanadium trace elements.

Initial 10x microscopic inspection reveals multiphase inclusions and growth zoning consistent with natural, untreated formation. As a Type III clarity gemstone, inclusions are expected and diagnostically significant.

Detailed gemological analysis is underway at AGA Lab, including refractive index (RI), specific gravity (SG), UV fluorescence response, and FTIR spectroscopy to assess potential origin and treatment history.

Topaz, the birthstone for November, is a gem prized for its hardness—ranking 8 on the Mohs scale—and crystal clarity, which often results in flawless stones.

This aluminum silicate mineral can form in a wide array of colors, though golden yellow, imperial orange, and pink are especially sought after. Known to crystallize in orthorhombic formations, topaz often grows in pegmatites and high-temperature quartz veins, making it a fascinating study in gemology.

Throughout history, it’s been believed to bring warmth, healing, and abundance to its wearer—qualities fitting for the rich tones of autumn.
