When moisture is trapped inside metal clay, it expands rapidly under extreme heat in the kiln. The result? Severe surface bubbling, blisters, and permanent shape deformation.

💡 How to prevent it:
Never guess if your piece is dry. Always perform the glass or mirror test: Place your dry clay piece on a clean mirror or warm metal surface for 10 seconds. If you see condensation or steam when you lift it, it’s NOT ready for the kiln yet!

Cracks? Fix them before the fire. 🔥

Every metal clay artist meets those tiny hairline cracks on a drying piece. The good news: they’re easy to fix — and you already have everything you need.

Left alone, a small crack won’t stay small. As the clay sinters and shrinks in the kiln, a hairline today can become a break tomorrow.

The fix is simple: take a little of the same clay you’re using, add a few drops of water to make a soft paste, and smooth it into the crack while the piece is still greenware. Let it dry, check it again, then fire with confidence.
