Eco-Friendly Handmade Gifts-Terracota Jewelry Kerala Murals/ Tanjore painting, Ceramics & Home Decor

Terracotta literally means ‘baked earth’ and it is made from Eco-friendly natural Clay, fired at a high temperature of 1800+ degrees to a state called BISQUE and then painted with skin safe colors. Making ornaments might seem to be a simple form of art, but it’s a labor-intensive technique. From hand carving the clay to molding it to desired shape and then drying it under sun and firing is a long process.

In olden days traditionally terracotta was used to make deities of worship, earthenware utensils to cook/serve food besides its use in ornamental jewelry and handicrafts. Several ancient sculptures of deities made with clay are still intact in India.

The art of terracotta is slowly dwindling away due to increasing competition posed by contemporary jewelry in modern times. Also the erosion of culture has resulted in shrinking market for terracotta ware. However the terracotta craftsmen are diversifying their skills to create innovative products that beautifully bring out the fusion of the old with the new, from modern looking terracotta jewelry to home décor items like wall art, lamps and tabletop display objects etc.
