👑 FROM BRANDON’S WORLD

A joke stops being funny when someone else becomes the punchline.

Bullying doesn’t always begin with a fight or something obvious.

Sometimes it starts with laughter.
Sometimes it sounds like teasing.
Sometimes it looks like making one child feel small while everyone else watches.

In Brandon’s Afro Magic, Brandon faces those moments too.

This post is a reminder that what some people call “just joking” can leave a real impact.

Let’s keep teaching children that kindness matters, words matter, and how we treat others matters.

A child can face bullying in a classroom, on a playground, or through a phone screen. The words may be dismissed as “just a joke,” but the hurt can stay with them long after the moment has passed.

And children are watching more than their peers. They see how adults speak to one another. They see people mocked, threatened, and treated as though cruelty is a sign of strength. Sometimes it feels like bullying has become part of the way our country talks to itself.

We have to show our children something better.

Bullying is wrong. It does not build confidence, earn respect, or make anyone stronger. It causes harm, and that harm can follow a person for years. Whether it happens at school, online, at work, or in public, we should be willing to call it what it is.

As October’s National Bullying Prevention Month begins, I want to talk about the courage it takes to be yourself, the kindness it takes to stand beside someone else, and the responsibility we all have to set a better example for our children.

More to come. 👑

The kids said, “Pass the mic.” 🎤👑

Even Brandon and Sakura are getting in on the —with a little crown magic of their own.

Brandon is learning to let his crown show. Sakura is right beside him, reminding him that everybody deserves to feel seen. 💜

Different crowns. Same magic. Everybody gets to glow.

Share this with a child who needs that reminder today. Brandon’s Afro Magic is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and oderrickmichaels.com.

👑 WORDS BUILD CROWNS

Confidence isn’t built only through major accomplishments. Sometimes it begins with one sentence from an adult who makes a child feel seen, safe and capable.

This Wednesday, try replacing pressure with curiosity:

Instead of asking, “Why can’t you get this right?”

Ask, “Which part feels the hardest? Let’s start there.”

Instead of saying, “Stop being so shy.”

Say, “Take your time. I’m listening when you’re ready.”

Instead of praising only natural ability, recognize effort:

“I noticed how hard you worked on that.”

Parents, grandparents, teachers and mentors—choose one of these phrases to use with a young person today.

Which one will you try? Save this post for later or share it with someone helping a child discover their confidence. 👑

👑 CROWN UP — YOU DID IT!

You made it through the week.

You learned.
You tried.
You grew.
You kept going.

THAT COUNTS.

You don’t have to be perfect to be proud of yourself.

Be kind.
Love yourself.
Give your best.
Celebrate your progress.

And never shrink your shine because somebody else’s crown looks different.

Yours was made for YOU. 👑✨

Parents, ask your child:

“What’s one thing YOU are proud of this week?”

Then tell them:

“I saw you trying. I’m proud of you.” ❤️

Celebrate the win.
Celebrate the effort.
Celebrate the kid.

👑 BRANDON’S THREE-POINT CROWN CHALLENGE 👑

Parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers—here’s a fun five-minute activity to try with your young reader today!

Give your child a piece of paper and ask them to draw a crown with three points. On each point, have them write or draw:

✨ Something BRAVE I did
💛 Something KIND I did
⭐ Something NEW I will try

Then let them color and decorate their crown however they choose!

For even more fun, adults can create a crown too. It’s a wonderful way to show children that courage, kindness and growth matter at every age.

When you’re finished, place the crowns somewhere everyone can see them as a reminder of the magic each person carries inside.

Share one of your child’s answers in the comments—or post a picture of the completed crown and tag O’Derrick Michaels, Author. We would love to celebrate their crown! 👑✨

👑 MONDAY CROWN CHECK 👑

A new week is a fresh opportunity for our children to learn, grow and believe in themselves.

They don’t have to know every answer or get everything right on the first try. Sometimes courage simply means trying again, asking for help or believing they can learn something new.

Brandon’s challenge for every young reader this week is simple:

✨ Choose one thing you will believe in yourself enough to try.

Parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers, ask your young reader:

“What is one brave thing you want to do this week?”

Let’s begin the week by reminding our children that they are capable, courageous and extraordinary—and that the magic was inside them all along. 👑✨
