🇺🇸 Did You Know: Memorial Day started as an African-American act of remembrance 🇺🇸

Just weeks after the Civil War ended in 1865, newly freed Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina organized a ceremony to honor more than 250 fallen Union soldiers who had been buried in mass graves after dying either in battle or in the brutal conditions of Confederate prison camps.

They properly reburied them, decorated their graves with flowers, and held a memorial procession. Children carried flowers, ministers prayed, and people sang hymns & spirituals.

Decoration Day was later officially established in 1868. The name “Memorial Day” wasn’t officially adopted until 1967, and it didn’t become a federal holiday until 1971 — more than 100 years after those first acts of remembrance.

This is a powerful piece of history worth remembering.

So while making your posts today, visiting gravesites, dragging your cooler onto the beach, or firing up the grill, take a moment to reflect. 🇺🇸
