A Bead In Time Jewelry is an original line by Dale Ellison handcrafted in Austin, Texas since 2010. Ellison takes pride in never designing the exact same piece twice, ensuring exclusivity for her customers. Creating her own metalwork, she geometrically cuts and hammers sheet metal before she begins beading. Ellison incorporates a variety of locally sourced beads, precious stones, vintage charms, chain and wire in her work. Finding the beauty within beads has led her to experiment with an array of materials from vintage Czech glass and seed beads to natural stones like turquoise, lapis, coral, jade and pearl. At the Art For the People gallery in Austin through October 30 is the Lyrical Jewelry exhibit. The exhibit features jewelry inspired by song lyrics.

My necklace, Node, was selected for the exhibit. It was inspired by one of my favorite songs by David Bowie, Heart’s Filthy Lesson.

The necklace reflects a non-romantic heart. It is surrounded by black seed beads and black organza. The organza has hand sewn black yarn. I selected a natural raw ruby to represent the heart; it dangles from a handmade barbed wire chain.

I’ve developed a new obsession with 11/0 seed beads—roughly the size of a speck and twice as demanding.

The upside: tiny beads make very good rings.

The downside: I may never find half of them again.
