We have known each other since kindergarten, so there is a lifetime of history between us. Today, she lives in Montana and I am here in Connecticut, but thousands of miles and decades of life have never diminished that connection. When she reached out about creating something together, I was thrilled to be part of it. The process began with a package of jewelry she was no longer wearing for a variety of reasons. From there came sketches, ideas, and experimentation. I removed the diamonds from their original settings so I could work with them individually, exploring different arrangements and even using silver models to help determine the direction of the final piece. What made this project especially meaningful was that the finished ring became a collaboration between my father and me. That makes this piece bittersweet, deeply personal, and filled with love on more than one level. I chose a two-tone design as a reflection of friendship, time, and the different chapters of our lives. The combination of silver and gold tones felt particularly fitting for two old friends who have shared so much history. Her personal style is clean and understated rather than ornate, and the design needed to reflect that. Five diamonds from several of the pieces she sent were incorporated into the new ring, each secured in a bezel setting. The bezels create a streamlined, contemporary appearance while also subtly echoing the design of her wedding set. At this point in both of our lives, we have come to appreciate that sometimes less truly is more. I think this ring captures that beautifully. Simple and unfussy, yet filled with layers of meaning that aren't immediately visible. It brings together stones from her past, a friendship that began in childhood, and a design created by two generations of my own family. And the note I received after the ring arrived? That pretty much said it all.

It is always a wonderful surprise to reconnect with someone who knew you long ago. We have both grown, followed very different paths, and gained a new appreciation for the people we have become along the way. He married a wonderfully creative woman who, as it turns out, knows quite a few people I know as well. A reminder of just how small the world can be. Years ago, his mother gifted her a diamond band. Although she wore and appreciated it, the style never truly felt like her and had become somewhat dated over time. When they came into the shop, we began collaborating on a redesign that would preserve the meaning of the original ring while creating something she could wear comfortably and often. One important consideration was their active lifestyle. They spend plenty of time outdoors, often accompanied by their Labrador retriever, so she wanted to avoid exposed prongs that could catch or snag. There was also one detail I especially wanted to preserve: the original ring contained 13 diamonds. His favorite number. Keeping all 13 stones in the new design gave us a meaningful foundation from which to begin. With their permission, I removed the diamonds from the original setting and began “sketching” with the stones themselves, arranging them into different compositions and sharing photographs along the way. After some thoughtful back-and-forth, the final design emerged. All 13 diamonds were individually bezel set in a flowing, wave-inspired pattern crafted in platinum. A European-style inside-round shank provides a comfortable fit, while contrasting finishes add another layer of interest: a soft matte finish on the ring paired with highly polished bezels surrounding each diamond. The finished piece is contemporary, comfortable, and perfectly suited to her style and active life. All while preserving every one of the 13 diamonds that made the original ring so meaningful. It remains one of my favorite redesigns.

He found me online and stopped into the shop one weekend, arriving well prepared with inspiration images and a clear sense of what his future fiancée would love. We began with the center stone. He was drawn to a square emerald-cut diamond, so I sourced several lab-grown diamonds that met his specifications and budget, each accompanied by an independent grading certificate. One stone immediately stood out to him, and that became the centerpiece around which we designed the rest of the ring. His vision also called for a pair of kite-shaped lab-grown diamonds flanking the center stone. Because kite cuts are less common, finding stones with the right proportions, size, and quality required some additional searching, but the right pair was well worth the effort. All three diamonds were set with delicate claw prongs. The kite-shaped side stones rise into cathedral-style shoulders, providing additional support to the center setting while maintaining the clean architectural lines of the design. Just as important as the stones themselves was the space surrounding them. He wanted the ring to feel clean, open, and understated rather than overly ornate. The finished design allows plenty of light to move through and around the diamonds, showcasing their brilliance while preserving the spare, contemporary aesthetic he envisioned. When he came to pick up the finished ring, there was only one detail he hadn't settled on. Exactly how and when he was going to propose. He knew he wanted a plan worthy of the ring and the woman who would wear it. A few months later, she said yes!

I practically grew up in her mother’s home as the best friend of her younger sister, a friendship that continues to this day. I even remember her mother wearing these earrings, which had originally belonged to her own mother. They had already been loved and worn by several generations before finding their way to their current wearer, who treasures them just as deeply. Then, during one of her daily walks last winter, she returned home and discovered, much to her dismay, that one of the earrings was missing. She retraced her route but had no luck finding it. Several days passed, and while out on another walk along the same route, she happened to look down and there it was. The earring had clearly been on quite an adventure. It had been run over and badly crushed, but remarkably, all of the important components were still there. Considering its history and sentimental value, finding it again felt like a small miracle. Fortunately, that meant we could restore it. All of the connecting links needed to be replaced, as did the ball dangle. The damaged frame was carefully straightened and reshaped to restore its original form. New silicone backs were also added to help keep the earrings more securely in place for future wear. While working on this pair, we also addressed another set of cherished earrings featuring diamond dangles. Although they had not yet failed, their connecting links were showing signs of wear, so those were replaced as a proactive measure before anything could be lost. Jewelry that has been loved and worn across generations inevitably carries signs of its journey. Sometimes the most meaningful work isn’t creating something new at all, it’s making sure a treasured piece is strong enough to continue its story.

She first came to me many years ago through a referral, looking for a retirement gift for a beloved colleague. That initial visit grew into jewelry repairs, additional projects, and eventually an introduction to her daughter and now son-in-law, for whom I had the pleasure of creating an engagement ring and wedding bands. This particular project began with a pair of pierced clip earrings from the 1990s. The original design featured genuine lapis and carnelian cabochons, but one of the stones was missing and the color combination no longer suited her current style. Now retired, she gravitates toward a lighter color palette and wanted a fresh pair of pearl earrings that she could wear often. Rather than starting from scratch, we saw an opportunity to transform the earrings she already owned. We replaced the original colored gemstones with freshwater button pearls, giving the existing design an entirely new look. Once the earrings were polished and refreshed, the transformation was complete. The result is a classic, versatile pair of pearl earrings that feels lighter, more current, and perfectly suited to her style today. Best of all, they have already become a regular part of her wardrobe. Sometimes a simple change is all it takes to make an older piece feel completely new again.

We had previously created a beautiful bracelet for her, designed by her husband and fabricated in our shop (https://www.rweberjewelry.com/portfolio/intertwined-two-tone-bangle-with-diamond-bezels/), so when she returned looking for a special birthday gift for her niece, the brainstorming began immediately. She brought in an assortment of loose stones, jewelry components, and family pieces to explore. Among them was a ring that had belonged to her mother. As she shared the story behind it, one detail became especially important: her niece had been very close to her grandmother. My first thought was to simply size the ring for her niece, but there was one problem. She doesn’t wear rings. Then she showed me a photograph of her niece wearing a stack of bracelets. That changed everything. We decided to transform the ring into a bracelet while preserving the original piece as completely as possible. One of the primary challenges was engineering the bracelet so the ring would remain centered on the top of the wrist and function securely as part of the design. To keep the project within budget, I suggested using sterling silver for the bracelet while retaining the original gold ring. The two-tone combination worked beautifully and gave the finished piece a fresh, contemporary look. I sourced several bangle-style bracelets before selecting one with bead details that complemented the character of the ring. From there, my goldsmith and I worked through the mechanics of incorporating the ring into the bracelet so it would serve both as the focal point and as part of the clasp system. The final construction uses the natural tension of the bangle along with the existing design of the ring to keep the piece securely in place, all while keeping the closure visually discreet. Best of all, we were able to preserve and use the entire original ring. The finished bracelet became more than a birthday gift. It allowed her niece to wear a piece of her grandmother’s jewelry in a way that suited her own style while keeping the original ring and its history intact. After receiving the gift, she shared these wonderful words:

“Kirsten LOVES her bracelet. She immediately recognized her grandmother’s ring and is just thrilled. It looks beautiful on her. Thank you! And John also loved it and thought the engineering was brilliant.”

For me, that is exactly what thoughtful jewelry redesign should do. Preserve the memory while creating something that can be loved and worn again.

I had previously sized several rings for her, including a cherished diamond ring that belonged to her grandmother. During one of our conversations, she mentioned having several other pieces tucked away that she simply no longer wore. Meaningful gifts from her grandmother, her husband, and other family members. Rather than allowing those stones to remain unworn, we began exploring how they could be brought together in a new design. A necklace wasn’t practical at this stage of her life, with little ones still in the pulling and grabbing phase, but a ring offered the perfect solution. We took apart a ring and a pendant, revealing a collection of stones in several different shapes and sizes. She loved the idea of transforming them into an “X marks the spot” ring for her middle finger, something distinctive enough to showcase the sentimental stones, yet comfortable and practical for everyday wear. As both a mother and a professional, she needed a design that could keep up with an active lifestyle. It needed to sit low on the hand, feel comfortable, and avoid high settings that could catch or scratch little ones. The challenge was finding the right configuration for stones of varying sizes and shapes while creating a design that felt balanced and intentional. I developed two subtly different layouts for her to consider, and once the final arrangement was selected, we determined that the baguette diamonds would be channel set while the round diamonds would be bead set. This allowed us to maintain the clean design while keeping the overall profile as low as possible. The finished ring brought everything together beautifully. Sentimental stones, thoughtful design, and everyday practicality. In this case, X really did mark the spot.

I first met her while visiting the West, introduced by my sister. We spent the afternoon around her kitchen table, talking, sharing stories, and getting to know one another. As our conversation unfolded, several silk jewelry pouches were placed on the table, each holding treasured pieces ready to begin a new chapter. Many of the pieces had been passed down through her family and had already been redesigned decades earlier to suit a busy professional life. Now, it was time to reimagine them once again. Among the loose gemstones was a beautiful sapphire that immediately stood out, waiting for the right design to showcase its color and character. Her goal was a pendant elegant enough for special occasions, yet versatile enough to wear every day. One of my favorite parts of the design process is arranging loose gemstones in different compositions until the perfect balance emerges. Once the design feels right, I determine the most beautiful and structurally sound way to bring it to life. I also believe that fine jewelry should be beautiful from every angle. The reverse side of a piece deserves as much attention as the front, ensuring it is thoughtfully finished no matter how it is viewed. The completed pendant features a classic channel-set diamond frame surrounding a vibrant sapphire secured in six elegant claw prongs. It is suspended from the chain by a series of bezel-set diamonds, allowing the chain to drape naturally while the pendant moves independently. The result is graceful movement, exceptional comfort, and a timeless design that seamlessly transitions from everyday wear to special occasions.

Sometimes the most important project isn’t a redesign, it’s preserving a piece that holds a lifetime of memories. I have had the pleasure of working with this client and her family for many years. She is an extraordinary person whose generosity and commitment to her community are truly inspiring, making it especially meaningful to help care for jewelry that means so much to her. While volunteering one day, she felt something catch on her hand. Looking down, she realized with great alarm that the center diamond from her engagement ring was gone. Even more concerning, one of the prongs had broken away. She immediately retraced her steps and, remarkably, found the diamond. She brought the ring to the shop along with several other pieces in need of repair, but restoring her engagement ring was understandably our highest priority. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the damage extended beyond the missing prong. Several of the crown prongs had developed cracks, as shown in the accompanying photographs. Damage of this nature can occur for a variety of reasons and often remains hidden until a failure occurs. Exposure to chlorine, for example, can weaken the alloys used in gold over time. Other possible causes include metal fatigue or imperfections created during the original casting process, such as trapped air or rapid cooling. These issues are typically impossible to detect until they become visible and are not necessarily the result of poor craftsmanship. This wedding set represented important milestones in her life. The engagement setting had been created to commemorate her tenth wedding anniversary, and the wedding band was added to celebrate her fifteenth. Together, the rings told the story of her marriage and held tremendous sentimental value. The damaged components are not repairable so we chose a solution that would provide greater long-term durability. The pear-shaped brilliant-cut center diamond was reset into a new platinum crown designed in a similar style, incorporating protective chevron prongs to better safeguard the delicate tip of the diamond. To complete the restoration, the wedding set was carefully separated so the engagement ring could be repaired. The new platinum crown was hand assembled, the diamond securely reset, and the rings were then precisely welded back together. The result is a beautifully restored wedding set that honors its history while providing the strength and security needed to be enjoyed for many years to come.

I have known this family for decades. They are kind, thoughtful, intelligent people, and it has been a privilege to work with them through many of life’s milestones. Every piece of jewelry purchased as a gift has always been chosen with great care, and the pieces they choose to repurpose often carry even deeper meaning. Their daughter has grown into an exceptional woman, carrying forward the same kindness, thoughtfulness, and grace that have long defined her family. I had the honor of creating the wedding bands for both her and her husband—classic, simple designs that suited them perfectly. For her engagement ring, inspiration came from a cherished family heirloom. Her grandmother owned an emerald and diamond ring that she had always admired. Today, that ring is worn and treasured by her mother, who loves it just as much. While emeralds possess extraordinary beauty, they are not always the most practical choice for an engagement ring intended for everyday wear. To honor the heirloom while creating a piece uniquely her own, we chose to reinterpret the design with a diamond center stone. Because quality was important to her, a certified natural oval brilliant-cut diamond was selected, complete with a laser-inscribed certificate number on the girdle for identification and authenticity. Working within an established budget, I recommended lab-grown diamonds for the accent stones. This allowed us to closely match the color and clarity of the center diamond while maximizing beauty and value throughout the design. Inspired by her grandmother’s ring, but thoughtfully updated with a few refinements, the finished piece captures the spirit and sentiment of the family heirloom while beginning a new chapter of its own. Crafted in 14k white gold, the ring features a certified natural oval brilliant-cut diamond center stone, accented by lab-grown round full-cut diamonds in prong settings and lab-grown baguette diamonds set in channels. The result is a timeless design that honors family history while creating new memories for generations to come.
