So many visitors today! Thank you so much for coming in on the first day of Art Escape and the Bayfield Art Festival as well as the Corny Art Crawl!

I managed to finish this Keweenaw Copper Brick with Keweenaw Copper Nuggets Pendant between talking with visitors.

Damaged but alive, a Callery pear tree survived the September 11 attacks and was rescued from the rubble of Ground Zero. Nurtured back to health over 9 years, it returned to the Memorial in 2010—a lasting symbol of resilience, renewal, and hope. 🌳✨

When I visited The Survivor Tree in NYC, I gathered a few of the leaves that had fallen and stored them in a book. I always had it in the back of my mind that I would create a memorial piece. Today, on September 11, I opened that book and used one of those leaves to create this handmade sterling silver pendant.

I chose a rare gaspeite stone to set on the leaf because its vibrant color reminds me of the first green of spring—renewal, new beginnings, and the quiet promise of buds waiting to burst into life.

Only after the piece was completely finished did I look up the meaning of gaspeite. Remarkably, it is a stone associated with grounding spiritual energy, releasing past emotional trauma, and offering protection during difficult times. The alignment felt incredibly profound. 🕊️💚

As I was sawing, soldering, and hammering the sterling silver sheet and wire today, my mind was with all the firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, K9 units, police officers, and civilians who tragically died that day. It was with the families, friends, neighbors, and an entire nation that had to learn to live with such a heartbreaking loss.

Beauty can grow from the ashes. We will never forget. 🇺🇸❤️

Copper replacement agates are extremely rare gemstones found exclusively in the old abandoned mine rock piles and waste dumps of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula.

Lake Superior Copper Brick!!

This is a unique historical material found in the Upper Peninsulas’ Keweenaw Peninsula!

It isn’t a natural stone, but ‘industrial slag’ and was formed in the Calumet & Hecla Mining smelters within the porous ceramic fire bricks lining the industrial smelters. When the copper melted down, the surrounding firebricks absorbed the copper and resulted in a dense, copper-fused and beautiful material perfect for unique jewelry.
