We are enjoying sharing memories and reflections.
Our story includes our own philanthropic product, PeaceTags, which
started as a stand-alone nonprofit company in 2007 and became part of AGJ in 2016.
(According to Steven):”Fredda and I were on a buying trip. She found these blank sterling silver pendants shaped like military dog tags. I truly didn’t understand why she was so excited. Yes, they were great looking, but I told her I wasn’t sure they were right for the store. She looked at me like I was an idiot (a look most husbands are familiar with) and exclaimed, “they AREN’T for the store, they’re for VETERANS!” In the span of about 10 minutes, Fredda had visualized a small non-profit company that would sell these military style “dog tags” ironically engraved with peace quotes. She would donate 100% of the proceeds to veterans causes.”
(Fredda) “My dad was a veteran of World War 11. His time in the US Air Force left a lasting impression on his life. Many of his friends who served overseas never came home. Numerous suffered from what they called “shell shock” in those days. We now call it PTSD. My dad instilled a deep respect for those brave enough to serve AND explained soldiers often came home with physical, emotional and spiritual injuries. In 2007, The Iraq War had been raging for a few years, and I was really upset about young people having limbs blown off by IEDS (improvised explosive devices) and wounds that weren’t visible. It seemed that EVERYONE could agree we should want a more peaceful world AND we should support veterans. I wanted to help and jewelry was something I understood, but I needed help. So, I called two dear friends-Patti Savoy and Maude May. When Patti gets behind a concept, there is NO STOPPING HER. Her talent, boundless energy and enthusiasm is inspiring and fun to be around. Maude is a gifted artist with a background in graphic design and typesetting. We had collaborated on numerous projects for the store. I knew if Patti and Maude were involved, we could make PeaceTags happen. And we did!”
(Patti Savoy) “Fredda and I would regularly brainstorm business and philanthropic ideas. I’ve known her for 30 years, and she’s one of the smartest and most creative people I know. PeaceTags were born through her belief that gratitude and love can be a healing force. From the beginning, I knew it wasn’t just another project, it was special. The concept was rooted in compassion, remembrance, and connection to our deserving veterans.
The Fisher House was one of the main beneficiaries of PeaceTags. This 501c3 organization provides housing (and many other services) for family members of Veterans being treated at VA Hospitals. Fredda and I would go to the Fisher House at VA Puget Sound and make a meal and eat dinner with these families. I remember countless stories, especially from moms whose kids had served and not come home whole. One story shared by a mother of a former Navy Seal and his journey with addiction really impacted me.
As I am writing this, I am reminded why I said yes to Fredda’s idea and I’m so grateful I did. These necklaces deeply touched people, including myself. I loved that wearing a PeaceTag was a way of saying, ‘you are not forgotten, we CARE.’I still do. In the end, PeaceTags were about more than honoring Veterans. They were a powerful way of spreading peace and compassion through beautiful and meaningful quotes-one tag at a time.”
