๐ŸŒฑ Willow Water๐Ÿ’งa natural, easy (and free) alternative to miracle gro.

Iโ€™ll never forget watching my Dad cut a few weeping willow twigs when I was 12 or 13. He simply stuck them in the ground next to their pond and walked away. You should just see those monsters now! Willows just want to grow, not much can stop them - I admire that tenacity โ˜บ๏ธ
The compounds contained in Willow are excellent for starting roots on plant cuttings and also for increasing growth and strength in seedlings and other plants.

Indolebutyric Acid (IBA): This is a naturally occurring auxin (plant hormone) that signals plant cells to produce new roots. It is the exact same growth-promoting hormone used in commercial rooting powders and gels.

Salicylic Acid (SA): Found in willows (and the basis for common aspirin), SA acts as a plant shield. It triggers the plantโ€™s immune system and keeps cut wounds from healing over prematurely, allowing the IBA time to take hold while preventing rot, bacteria, and fungi. - science sources; garden myths.com and preparednessmama.

Thereโ€™s many methods to making this. I just yank off a few branches and shove them in a plastic container and fill with rainwater, let steep for 1 to 3 days, strain out plant matter and use. Any unused liquid can be stored in the fridge for up to two months.

June is peak silk moth season. The largest, most spectacular moths in North America emerge this month โ€” and most of them fly for less than two weeks.

Already flying since May: hummingbird clearwing and snowberry clearwing at the flowers during the day. White-lined sphinx hovering at dusk. Giant leopard moth with bold black spots on white wings.

๐ŸŒฟ Emerging this month:

- Polyphemus moth โ€” five-inch wingspan with enormous eyespots on the hind wings. One of the largest moths in your yard.
- Luna moth โ€” pale green, long tails, no mouth. Roughly a week to find a mate and lay eggs. That's the whole adult life.
- Io moth โ€” bright yellow with eyespots. The caterpillar stings โ€” the adult is harmless.
- Imperial moth โ€” yellow and brown, nearly as large as the polyphemus. Emerging in mid-to-late June.
- Promethea moth โ€” males fly during the day. One of the few silk moths you can see in daylight.
- Rosy maple moth โ€” bright pink and yellow. The most photographed moth in the eastern US.

Most of them have no mouth as adults. They emerged to reproduce, not to eat. June nights are when it happens ๐Ÿพ
