Gemstone Tuesday! ✨

Tourmaline, one of October’s modern birthstones, comes in a beautiful range of colors — including black! The iron-rich black variety is known as schorl and was popular in Victorian-era jewelry, though it’s less common in jewelry today.

One client chose black tourmaline for an inlay after finding onyx too matte for their taste. 🖤

💚 Left: Green gold replaces yellow gold, with more green gold layers than white or red gold. We use 14K green gold for its greener hue compared with 18K green gold.

💛 Right: 18K yellow gold takes the spotlight, with more yellow gold layers than white or red gold.

This 4mm-wide Mokume ring features the client’s diamond — approximately ¼ct— in a graceful custom Palladium 950 setting.

Some clients love the look of rails but prefer a very narrow edge — around 0.5mm. Our standard rails are 1.2mm wide each, though we can also make them 1mm wide.

For an even narrower look, Jim adds a liner that extends beyond the edges of the Mokume, then shapes that extra metal into rails.

Opal, October’s traditional birthstone, ranks 5–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it less suited to the demands of an everyday ring. An inlay offers another way to incorporate opal, though it still needs care to avoid scratches and damage.

This client-designed ring pairs diamonds with opal inlay in Palladium 950 and sterling silver Mokume, finished with narrow 14K red gold flush square rails. 💍
