Honestly I never knew there was a ‘world lupus day’ and appreciate all the efforts to bring more awareness to this disease that has so many layers and complications. If you’re reading this share the aspect of lupus I’d like to highlight today, as it’s often unrecognized is the mental health impacts that lupus has, as often this part goes unrecognized in our allopathic medical symptoms. 80-90% of folks with Lupus will also deal with anxiety, depression, brain fog and memory lapse. Additionally the impact of never knowing what’s going to impact you, or how you will feel day to day, can contribute to PTSD, and trauma around the medical system. I’ve lived with lupus for 33 years. It’s impact on my life is intricately woven into my experience of the world. As a mental health professional I’m especially grateful that there’s more media attention around this chronic illness and hope that those of us coping with it find more community support and validation through this day of awareness.
