With a gold at all-time highs, and demand for neo-vintage remaining strong from collectors, there’s no wonder why this piece captures the attention of so many. Unlike standard quartz watches, the Cartier Santos Galbée Chronoflex (Ref. 2425) is a perpetual calendar chronograph, offering a level of mechanical complexity that is invisible until you interact with it. The Chronoflex is housed in the Galbée case, which was introduced in 1987. The term galbée means “curved” or “sculpted,” referring to the way the case lugs curve downward to hug the wrist more comfortably. It maintains the classic Cartier DNA with a silvered opaline dial, Roman numerals, and accented by blue sword-shaped hands. The fan-shaped date window at 12 o’clock is a signature of this specific movement. Featuring the famous integrated “Santos” bracelet with exposed 18K yellow gold screws, and finished with the signature blue sapphire cabochon. In this model, the crown is also used to navigate the perpetual calendar settings.
The “Secret” Movement: Caliber 212P
The heart of this watch is the Caliber 212P, a high-end quartz movement developed by Piaget.
The Hidden Perpetual Calendar: The watch automatically accounts for months with 30/31 days and leap years – rarely requiring a manual date adjustment.
Mechanical Feel: The chronograph pushers have a tactile “click” similar to a mechanical watch, and the hands move in a sweeping or stepped motion that feels more premium than basic quartz.
Split-Second Capability: Using a specific sequence of the pushers, the movement can track split times, despite having a simplified two-register dial.
