From time to time in the years to come, I hope you will be treated unfairly, so that you will come to know the value of justice. I hope that you will suffer betrayal because that will teach you the importance of loyalty. Sorry to say, but I hope you will be lonely from time to time so that you don’t take friends for granted. I wish you bad luck, again, from time to time so that you will be conscious of the role of chance in life and understand that your success is not completely deserved and that the failure of others is not completely deserved either. And when you lose, as you will from time to time, I hope every now and then, your opponent will gloat over your failure. It is a way for you to understand the importance of sportsmanship. I hope you’ll be ignored so you know the importance of listening to others, and I hope you will have just enough pain to learn compassion. Whether I wish these things or not, they’re going to happen. And whether you benefit from them or not will depend upon your ability to see the message in your misfortunes.

"The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself." ~ Rita Mae Brown

In her impactful quote, "The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself," Rita Mae Brown paints a stark picture of the potential pitfalls of prioritizing acceptance over authenticity. Imagine two paths: one wide and smooth, lined with approving faces, and the other narrow and winding, leading to an unknown but potentially fulfilling destination.

Conformity, the wide path, offers the allure of instant acceptance. By blending in, following the crowd, and suppressing dissenting opinions, we avoid conflict and gain the approval of others. Imagine wearing the "right" clothes, saying the "right" things, fitting perfectly into the mold.

But Brown warns that this path comes at a cost: self-abandonment. By constantly molding ourselves to please others, we lose touch with our true selves, desires, and aspirations. Imagine wearing a mask that hides your true expression, feeling a disconnect between your outer presentation and your inner reality.

The alternate path, while less traveled and potentially lonely, leads to self-discovery and fulfillment. It requires courage to embrace your unique voice, challenge the status quo, and forge your own path. Imagine expressing your authentic self, even if it means facing disapproval or discomfort, knowing you are living in alignment with your values.

The quote isn't a blanket condemnation of all forms of conformity. Sometimes, social norms serve a purpose, and adapting to our environment is necessary. However, it encourages us to be mindful of the cost. Are we blending in to truly connect, or are we sacrificing our individuality for fleeting acceptance?

Ultimately, Brown's message is a call to self-awareness and authenticity. Choose the path that allows you to be your true self, express your unique voice, and live a life that resonates with your deepest values, even if it means walking alone sometimes. Remember, true fulfillment lies not in everyone's approval, but in living a life true to yourself.

Our childhood is what shapes us for adulthood. The things we go through and the ways we grow all feed into who we turn out...

"Symbolism is the language of the Mysteries; in fact it is the language not only of mysticism and philosophy but of all Nature, for every law and power active in universal procedure is manifested to the limited sense perceptions of man through the medium of the symbol. Every form existing the diversified sphere of being is symbolic of the divine activity by which it is produced. By symbols men have ever sought to communicate to each other those thoughts which transcend the limitations of language."
