Episode 16, and this is the harshest they’ve been.

Justin and Rob put Gerald Charles in F. Not low, not divisive, F. They don’t like a single watch in the range, and the phrase that came up was the ugliest they’ve ever seen.

Here’s what makes that a hard position to hold. Gerald Charles was founded by Gérald Genta in 2000, and the name is his own first two names. He designed for the brand himself until he died in 2011.

The same man drew the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. Audemars Piguet is sitting in S on this board.

Franck Muller made 50 of these back in 1996, and it looks nothing like almost any other Franck Muller.

No tonneau case, no Cintree Curvex curve, no exploding numerals anywhere. The Sport Chronograph from 1996 sports a simple round three piece case and a black dial.

Franck Muller built his entire name on shaped cases. This is what happened the one time he went round.

The movement is a Lemania 1874 reworked in house, with chamfering and Geneva striping added over the base.

Every watch in the run was individually numbered and used two distinct dial layouts, the three register seen here and an even rarer two register.

The brand released a tribute model a few years ago, but the original just can’t be beat!

Christopher turned the question around on Zach. One brand, for the rest of your life.

Zach went Patek Philippe, and his case is that nobody else covers the whole board. The artistic side, the mechanical side, the history behind it. Most brands are good at one of those.

Then he named his favourite, and it wasn’t a Nautilus. It was the 5036.

That’s the annual calendar. A calendar that knows which months have 30 days and which have 31, so it only needs correcting once a year, at the end of February. Patek’s first one arrived in the mid 1990s and there had been nothing like it on the market before it. The 5036 took that and added a moonphase and a power reserve on top.

Which is the argument in one watch. A complication Patek got to first, in a 37mm case most people would walk straight past.

There is nowhere in the ocean this watch isn’t certified for.

The Rolex Deepsea Challenge is guaranteed waterproof to 11,000 metres. Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the ocean, bottoms out at roughly 10,935.

It earned its rating the hard way. In 2012 an experimental version was strapped to the robotic arm of the submersible James Cameron took down into the Mariana Trench, and it came back up running.

The caseback carries two dates. 23 January 1960, when a Rolex went down on the outside of the Trieste, and 26 March 2012, when Cameron made his solo dive.

The case is built using the Ringlock system. A thick domed sapphire crystal, a compression ring in nitrogen alloyed steel, and a titanium back, so the ring carries the pressure instead of the glass.

It’s also the first Rolex made entirely from RLX titanium, which is 30% lighter than the experimental steel watch it was derived from. 50mm, calibre 3230, roughly 70 hours of reserve.

This is the first one where they both turned on the watch.

Justin and Rob’s problem with the Patek 5980 is that it’s a Nautilus asked to carry something the Nautilus was never shaped to hold. A 5711 is 8.3mm thick. This is 12.2. That’s almost 4mm, and you feel every bit of it.

The reason is straightforward. The time and date movement in a 5711 stands 3.3mm tall. The flyback chronograph in the 5980 is 6.63mm. Roughly double, and the case has to put that somewhere.

In fairness, that movement was Patek’s first in house automatic chronograph, so it was for good reason.

Their opinion is that a Nautilus is a thin watch, and the moment it stops being thin it stops being the thing you wanted in the first place. So what does it say about you? That you wanted a Nautilus and you wanted a chronograph, and you were willing to give up the reason the Nautilus works in order to have both.

Every star on this De Bethune is a white gold pin, set into the surface of the titanium one at a time by hand.

The colour isn’t paint either. The dial is grade 5 titanium polished to a mirror and then heated, and the temperature alone decides what shade it turns. This one was taken all the way to burgundy.

Even the Milky Way running across it was cut in, micro milled into the titanium by laser and then gilded with 24k gold leaf.

The calibre is the DB2005, hand wound, 160 parts, and it runs for six days off a self regulating twin barrel. The escape wheel is silicon and the balance is titanium with white gold inserts.

Underneath that sits a triple pare chute shock absorber, and the lugs are hollowed out and built into the case rather than attached to it. 40.6mm of titanium, 8.8mm thick.

Justin’s way into A. Lange & Söhne isn’t a Lange 1.

It’s the Cabaret. Lange’s first properly rectangular watch, launched in 1997, and this reference ran until 2009.

What separates it from every other rectangular dress watch is the outsize date. Lange didn’t drop a round movement into a shaped case to get there either. The calibre L931.3 is hand wound, made in house, and built shaped to fit.

Turn it over and nothing has been held back. Hand engraved balance c**k, gold chatons, blued screws, a mirror polished cap over the escape wheel. The same finishing that goes into Langes costing several times this.

36mm by 26mm of rose gold, 9.1mm thick. Justin’s point is that nothing else gets you this much Lange for the money.

This watch shows you the whole month at once, and even tells you which days are the weekend.

The ring around the outside of the dial on the Krayon Anyday has the numbers 1 to 31 cut out of it, with a second ring that turns underneath, colouring the weekend days differently from the working ones.

A crescent moon pointer sits over today’s date and jumps to the next at midnight, so the whole calendar reads at a glance rather than through a window.
Four dots at 6 o’clock preview the first days of next month, so you can even see over the edge of the month you’re currently standing in.

Remi Maillat spent six years at Cartier designing complications before he started Krayon. His first watch tracked sunrise and sunset for anywhere on earth. This is the third model, and the one built for actual everyday use.

The calibre C032 is his own and uses 378 components and 46 jewels. It is hand wound with 72 hours of reserve and a stop seconds complication. 39mm of white gold, 9.5mm thick, with a team of just 12 watchmakers behind it.
