One of the best ways to learn how to evaluate a bird is to understand body width and overall body structure. 🐔

I wanted to share this graphic because it does a great job of illustrating why width matters. While the exact proportions will vary from breed to breed, the principle applies across the board.

To me, body width is one of the most noticeable differences between a bird produced primarily for mass production and one from a breeder who is carefully selecting breeding stock generation after generation.

A bird can be beautiful, have good color, and still lack the width, depth, bone, and substance that define excellent breed type. In breeds like the English Orpington, that broad, substantial body is a huge part of what makes the breed what it is.

When selecting breeding birds, I’m not just looking at the feathers. I’m looking at the whole bird: width, depth, bone, leg placement, structure, feathering, balance, and how well it represents the breed standard.

The goal isn’t simply to produce more chicks. It’s to consistently reproduce the qualities that make the breed special. That kind of selection is what separates breeding with a purpose from simply breeding birds. 🌱🐔
