Here are some tufa stone cast pieces that I made featuring Royston Turquoise. These pieces are sold, just sharing. DM if interested, as I can always make another.

Tufa-casting is an old Navajo technique where the impression of the bracelet is carved in volcanic stone (tufa-stone) and the molten melted is poured into the impression. This was one of the very first techniques that the Navajo used in the late 1800’s. This style is often mistaken as “sand-casting”, as tufa casting is a different technique than sandcasting.

Men's Turquoise Bracelet

Here is a large men's size turquoise bracelet that I just recently made. It is made out of sterling silver that is hand-stamped and filed with an "old-style" flair and embellished with a nugget-cut turquoise stone from the Sleeping Beauty mine.

It measures 6-1/2 inches end to end, with an opening of 1-1/2 inches. (8-inch circumference). 1-5/16 inch wide. 165 grams.

Handmade by Erick Begay.

Starry Morning-

Here is a rendition of belt buckle I made about 10 years ago. Initially, it was a "mis-cast" from a tufa-stone carving. I originally carved a border and tried to squeeze out another casting from the carving, but the border didn't cast, but all the detail did.

This mis-cast piece sat in my scrap box for years and I recently found it and rebuilt the border with handmade techniques. The last photograph shows the original piece that was cast completely.

I designed this piece with the inspiration of Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting of Starry Night. The buckle is appropriately named "Starry Morning" as the early light of the morning is considered sacred to the Navajo. The buckle incorporates the scenic mountains of Monument Valley with the background delicately swirling in the spirit of Van Gogh's Starry Night. The buckle is studded with a fine piece of #8 spiderweb turquoise.

Royston and Pearls

Here is a rendition of a squash blossom I recently made with Royston Turquoise and freshwater Pearls.

This piece was another experiment, as I never thought of the blue/green/brown hues of Royston mixing with pearls. I really like the feel of it when it all came together. And I might have to work out a few new pieces with the combination.

White Buffalo and Golden Hills.

Lately, I have been combining Golden Hills turquoise and White Buffalo stones. I also wanted the silverwork to have a timeless flow to it. I like the combination and results.

Here are a few pieces that were made recently from this branch of work.

For my local Las Vegas friends:

Check out The Delbert Anderson quartet tonight at the West Charleston Library at 7pm. (Free)

Delbert Anderson (Navajo) is an extraordinary jazz trumpet player from Shiprock, NM. His songs embrace traditional songs and chants with jazz.

We saw him last night and we were impressed and inspired by this group of talented musicians.
