Opossums, often misunderstood and unfairly feared, are actually one of nature’s most effective pest control animals. Studies have shown that a single opossum can consume up to 5,000 ticks in one season, helping significantly reduce the spread of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
These nocturnal marsupials play a vital ecological role by cleaning up the environment eating dead animals, insects, and even rotting fruit. Contrary to popular belief, opossums rarely carry or transmit rabies. Their low body temperature (typically 94–97°F) makes it difficult for the rabies virus to survive in their system.
