Iaia Iaia is a fine jewelry line exploring the movement of craft and culture. By Arianna Calabrese

Inspired by ancient caravans, crossroads, and mobilities, Iaia designs draw on craftsmanship from a cross-section of cultures to explore the ways our world is woven together. Custom ❤️

First came an engagement ring for her. Realized in 22kt gold, this ring is inspired by the connected history of Punjab & Iran and swaps a diamond for a saffron-colored sapphire. A hidden lotus (a nod to the client’s name), echoing the stone carvings of Persepolis, is carved in turquoise and set so that it will always touch her skin.

Then, came a wedding band for him. Also in 22kt gold, and made in response to the engagement ring so that the two rings form a pair: each one completely unique, but echoing the other in form and hidden details. His ring is inspired by Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s throne and was hand-carved by master artisans in Jaipur, India. We hid a custom motif (inspired by this couples’ lucky number) in turquoise & orange sapphire on the inner band to touch his skin, too.

I love custom work! It’s an honor to work one-on-one with clients in an intimate creative space. This project and this couple taught me so much about love, about the sacredness of care and attention, about how to come together in union while honoring each distinctive history and individuality.

I love how these ring feels both ancient and fresh. I love how the patina on the 22kt gold will continue to soften & change as the years go by—a living symbol of a shared life.

Jaipur workshops through the eyes of

Jaipur’s identity as a jewelry city is inseparable from the moment of people, materials, and skills across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. It is what it is because of migration: craftsmen moved by political change, stones carried along trade routes, techniques that traveled and adapted to local markets.

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, and deliberately conceived as a commerce city with designated, specialized markets. At the same time, the weakening of the Mughal Empire prompted waves of skilled artisans to leave older imperial centers like Delhi, Agra, and Lahore to search for new patrons and stable markets.

And so…goldsmithers, enamellers, gem-setters, and stone cutters migrated to Jaipur carrying highly developed techniques that had been refined in Mughal court ateliers.

Under British colonial rule, Jaipur’s jewelry economy adapted by shifting toward export markets and commissions catered to European tastes. But underneath changing surface aesthetics, the traditional techniques resisted.

Today, Jaipur jewelry workshops continue to rely on migrant labor from across Rajasthan and neighboring states. With that, it really is a living archive of migration & proof that craft survives not by remaining fixed but by traveling, adapting, and finding new ground.

🖤🤍TLDR: Migration didn’t dilute craft. It concentrated it. Jaipur served, and continues to serve, as a nexus where dispersed traditions could meet, be refined, and continue forward.🤍🖤

In the stone workshops of Jaipur 💘 we work directly with artisans who shape each stone specifically for our designs. We very rarely purchase finished stones, choosing to work with the raw material instead. The work is slow, precise, and part of a lineage that has shaped Jaipur into the world’s gemstone capital.

For centuries, artisans here have cut, polished, and traded stones for local patrons and global houses alike. The city’s gemstone reputation grew with royal support starting with Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, and drawing generations of skilled cutters whose knowledge still lives in these workshops. Today Jaipur remains one of the most important places to source raw materials and finished jewelry. It’s a true crossroads where technique and history continue to evolve 🌀
