💗 Lila Downs 💗

🌍🇲🇽 Today, in front of billions of people across the globe, the 2026 FIFA World Cup opened at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City — and the first voice the world heard was a Mixtec woman from Oaxaca.

Her name is Lila Downs. And she didn't just perform. She stood at the center of the world's biggest stage and said: "People of the world, welcome to Mexico."

Born Ana Lila Downs Sánchez on September 9, 1968, in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Lila is the daughter of Anita Sánchez — an Indigenous Mixtec cabaret singer from the mountains of Oaxaca — and Allen Downs, a Scottish-American art professor from Minnesota. She grew up speaking Spanish and Mixtec, surrounded by the 16 Indigenous languages and communities of Oaxaca — one of Mexico's most culturally rich states.

When her father passed away at age 16, she returned to her roots in Oaxaca. That experience — along with a moment that changed her life forever — shaped everything that followed. One day, while working at a small store in the Mixtec mountains, a father walked in and asked her to translate his son's death certificate. The young man had drowned trying to cross the border into the United States. She never forgot it. She turned that grief into music. And that music became her life's mission.

Lila went on to study classical voice and cultural anthropology. She recorded songs not just in Spanish and English, but in Mixtec, Zapotec, Nahuatl, Mayan, and Purépecha — Indigenous languages of Mexico that have survived centuries of erasure. She became one of the first major artists to bring Mixtec music to a global stage, blending folk, jazz, blues, ranchera, and hip-hop into something entirely her own.

She has won 1 Grammy Award and 6 Latin Grammy Awards, including the 2024 Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album for Raíz Nunca Me Fuí. She has spent decades as a global ambassador for Indigenous Mexican culture, advocating for immigrant rights, the preservation of native languages, and the dignity of communities that the world too often forgets.

Today, at Estadio Azteca — the only stadium to have hosted two FIFA World Cup Finals — she opened the 2026 World Cup alongside Shakira, Maná, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, J Balvin, Los Ángeles Azules, and Danny Ocean. The ceremony was a celebration of Aztec culture, with thousands of dancers in traditional dress filling the pitch.

But it was Lila who welcomed the world first. A woman whose mother's people have lived in Oaxaca for thousands of years. A woman who once translated a death certificate for a grieving father — and decided the world needed to hear those stories.

Billions watched. And Mexico led with its Indigenous soul. 🙏🌿🇲🇽
